PMIC VI group in SD

I am considering a transfer to the PMIC VI team in SD. I don't know anyone in that group, however my background is more in power electronics. I heard some good and bad things about the group but I am not quite sure how accurate these things are.

What is the culture and atmosphere like there especially for senior or staff engineer level? Do managers care about engineers in this group? Is there a good work/life balance? Are team members cooperative and supportive? Are people happy in general in this group?

Any information would help. Thanks.

I know that the PMIC group has recently hired about 10 new engineers. Any one knows why they would do that? Any new project is coming?

@gdjxj care to share a few of those disturbing stories? Is this group also responsible for system-level design- or only test? If only test, which group does system design?

Let's keep this thread alive!

@gboyo All I know about that group is they run basic bench tests on their chips. I have heard really disturbing stories from that group as well. To answer your question, switching groups within the company is not an issue as long as you know the right people in the group you are interested in. They transferred someone recently with coding skills in my group even though she didn't know anything about what we are doing when she started. Heck they transferred a guy with mechanical engineering degree because he was proficient in SolidWorks. It is all about connections tbh.

What are the other teams in Qcom that one can switch from PMIC VI to them? Thank you for your answers.

PMIC VI is the textbook definition of a cesspool. I used to work there but I couldn't take it anymore so I switched to another team at Qcom. I didn't have to relocate luckily. Many people have complained over the years about the director xma and the complaints reached the HR but nothing happened, maybe just a slap on his hand. Unless you are Chinese or at least SE Asian stay away. Even if you are reporting to the VP you will have to deal with xma in some way or another.
I would avoid this group if I were you.

I worked there and xma was a great boss. Be straith forward to him and he will be honest to you. Do good work and he will give you changes to grow knowledge. He will push you a bit - but in a fair way. And by the way ... i am not asian ;-) Greetings to the cool PMIC group.

Why is everybody bashing the infamous xma?

OP: I have been working at qcom for over a decade and I know PMIC VI since it was a small group. My department has a lot of overlapping projects with PMIC VI so I get to work with engineers from this group so often. Most junior engineers there are hardworking and pleasant to work with. The problem with this group is the managment attitude toward their engineers. I can attest that the culture is very asian in this group, everytime I walk into the lab I feel like I am in China. It was shocking when xma moved up from staff to dr in just 3 years despite his poor command of English in addition to his severely lacking communication skills. He favors his countrymen indeed. The group is in high demand as someone mentioned but don't expect to gain skills that will be useful for your career. You will have hard time finding jobs if you want to leave one day. I recommend you try to establish a good rapport with some of the junior engineers there before you make the move. Good luck!

"xma" is a figment of your imagination. No one by those initials is VP in this team. You are very confused.

Avoid at all costs. So you did a great job, everybody praised and applauded your work but xma didn't like, and most likely wouldn't if you are not asian, then you are doomed. Cheap culture and depressing atmosphere.

Pretty much an Asian-Centric culture, if you are not from an Asian background you will be given hard time. Engineers are treated like low life, disposable test monkeys. I wouldn't recommend this group for someone with strong background.

On the other hand, if career growth, learning, and treated with respect are not one of your priorities I don't see the reason why you shouldn't join. They do some cool team building events, group photos, funny email threads that keep going around for days. The VP is a part time actor and a surfer dude so you might also want to go to his shows or join him surfing. The VP and his good ol' boys go to breweries on Friday nights and talk trash especially about Indians. The VP would tell you how he found India so dirty when he visited.

OP, I work frequently with the PMIC VI group and can assure you that this a good group to work for. Your hard work will be appreciated and you will get to learn a lot. The comment about Asian culture is also incorrect. You will get to work with people from all backgrounds. Management cares about their employees. Nothing more to ask. Good luck!

This is a good team to join. VI is not a department with "high status" but the group is in demand and is managed well. Management in this group really cares about their employees. You will be treated well.

Lots of group hugs, holding hands and skipping around the maypole. You will fit right in.

You will not find a better VP. Lots of sarcastic responses here, this is not one of them. Managers are better than average. High demand for the service. It's a good place to be. I am in a position to know.
