They have corporate run retail stores because the Indirect locations are useless. They cause nothing but headaches for customers and definitely play a big part of customers jumping ship (obviously the shadiness of corporate stores plays a big role in that too), If the company ever plans to resurrect they will need to start seriously focusing on Integrity, which is something that disappeared from Verizon retail many many years ago.

My neighbors are obese and bedridden. There's a guy from the middle of the block who trained his husky to p--p and piss all over their backyard. They don't even escort the dog, they just open the door and the husky runs to their house to drop his stinky load. He likes to pee in the front yard by the tree but the big loads are for their back yard. This past winter I noticed an accumulation of poo in the front yard and was upset because it looked gross and I wanted to do snow angels with my daughter. I knocked on his door and told him to keep the SHT in their back yard because we don't want to see it. He said "No problem man" and gave me a high 5.
While it's true that some idiot consumers demand help, the same is true of lots of items such as laptops. Unless they are getting an Apple at that store, people who don't do online buy PCs at BestBuy etc rather than going to Dell or HP stores. And presumably Dell/HP/etc don't feel the need to open lots of stores, so it must sort of work for them (relative to alternatives).
Now it may certainly be the case that many more idiots are in the market for phones than for PCs, so there may be a greater handholding need. Question is whether it is worth it.

Corp stores exist because consumers are f---ing idiots and morons who can't figure anything out.
Cell phone shops are useless in entirety regardless of whether they are direct or indirect. Almost everything may be done online with regards to service plans.
Phones and accessories may be had for far less online. I don't understand why people even go into these stores. They must enjoy being harassed and pressured to pay too much and buy crap they don't need.
I personally don't know anyone who has set foot in a cell phone store recently. Why do they exist at all?
