Thread regarding Wal-Mart Stores Inc. layoffs

Walmart getting rid of longtime employees

I'll be 35 this month and had 18 (almost 19) years with the company. I was let go like I meant nothing. Worked hard for all those years. Starting as a cashier and finally making my way to the Home Office after 8 years in the store. None of it meant a thing. Also, I am 100% certain that they had no intentions of rehiring me during my grace period. I have a feeling this is a way to rid of all (or a big portion of) long term associates. However, they are trying to do this in a way so they do not get a lawsuit against them. I hate to be bitter and harbor ill feelings but what they are doing is wrong. They want to fire all these long term associates and bring in college students they can pay less. The Walmart culture goes out the door little by little with each associate they let go. Eventually, all Walmart culture will be gone and it will no longer be the company we all once loved and worked our asses off for. I feel sorry for those poor soles that are still there.

Bumping from older thread (@NEurZks-nwpz), more people should read this.

This is a purposeful trend at Walmart. Son worked for them for 10 years and they manufactured excuses to let fire him. No loyalty to the workers that do a great job that allows them to service the customer and earn a profit. Disgusting!

Long term workers are a financial drain on the company. I wish I had known this before I ever worked with them. it took a long time but I am finally at a place where you are appreciated. As for clocking in early? That was because someone told me I needed to, hence the unfortunate on the dot 5th hour which moved me 3 minutes ahead. Had I remembered this, I would have clocked out and helped the last customer off the clock.

After 25 yrs.... I'm getting same treatment. Cut my hours due to me having Sundays off, I'm no longer able to be on 40 hour team schedule and if I quit, I lose 120 hours of sick time and 7 weeks vacation! YAY. NOT.

Been at Wal-Mart 35 years. The pay is terrible considering you never get cost of living raises and they only praise lazy workers and brown nose workers. Place is being ran by team leads who have no idea what they are doing. The other associates do all the work. Leads just walk around and collect the bonuses we worked for.

Yeah so I was having a normal work day and a coach told me our AP needed to see me and I thought nothing of. I get to the office and some AP from another Walmart started to interigate me and tried brain washing me in to thinking I intentionally stole from self check outs. I know I never stole from Walmart! I literally stuck up for myself. It was such a terrible feeling I had. I still have a bad feeling when I think about it!! And no one would help me my store manager! Market manager! Or home office HR! They're is a lady that stands at the door and makes rude comments when I come in the store! They did this to someone's Mother and Grandmother dedicated to they're job for 27 years! I have strong faith knowing God does things for a reason. And I know he is my protector! He will take vengeance on all my enemies. I will watch them all fail and fall.

Also, if you had a history of having an accident, they will usually start you with a written coaching. I have seen cart guys fired on a constant basis. I got a D day for taking my lunch 3 minutes late. I was waiting for a 3PM person that wasn't scheduled or available. I had a last minute customer. I should not have clocked in early, which would have given me 10 minutes. You MUST take your lunch BEFORE the 5th hour. You do not get that last minute, like Costco. If you are on the dot on the 5th hour, you are already too late. The timeclock will round out your time and move you 3 minutes ahead, making you 3 minutes late on taking your lunch so you get written up. They can also set you up and have you by yourself and then fired for the empty cart rail when it was already low when you started your shift. I am in ahappier place now. I also found out the hard way you cannot afford to get any coachings. They structure it so you don't get caught up. Once you get your first one it is hard to get caught up. Anything different will move you to decision day and then firing as they like to start you with a written.

I was "displaced" as they call it after a total of 28 years. Seven then 21. I think my area in the home office was getting rid of older associates, and ones that didn't fit their mold, some that have had ADA approved disabilities. I think they wanted college kids that they paid less and looked a certain preppy way. Dont tell me after 20+ years i didnt know morevabout my job. They made their evaluations to where noone could really get a good raise. I went four years of getting little to no raise. When I say little, naybe 25 cents if I was lucky. I got bigger raises in the 1980's working as a sales clerk in the store I started in.
I'm trying not to be bitter because I was getting burned out anyway. I'm like the other person that said they didn't think they intended on hiring us in another position during our grace period. Walmart is not Sam's walmart anymore. He was a good man. I used to see him in the halls before he passed away, I was at his memorial, and I was at the national medal if honor ceremony with George Bush. It was a totally different environment. Fun place to work way back then. Up until recent years when they started taking the fun parts out a little at a time until there was nothing fun about it.

To the poster below me: please repost that without giving your name and store number. It's important that people know what's going on but names or identifiable info is not allowed on this forum so I'm worried the whole thing will be deleted just for those two things.

I’m Dean from store 5313 lake St. Louis Mo. I worked at walmart 16 1/2 years and I’m over 70 years old. Always had above average. Reviews when they really done reviews. The last 3-4 years I’ve worked part time 22 hours week. Never been coached or wrote up. Always done my job in produce the right way and 100%. Now the Dept has a sonic shift manager as the boss. Never worked in produce in his 22 year life. There is no stocking culling cleaning freight stocking filling sales floor or rotating being done correctly If done at all. All of sudden management cut my hours yo 8!per week saying n hours available. Then they hired 4 full time people for produce. Needless to say I cannot work just 8 hours. I asked about it to no avail. So I quit a job that I used to enjoy because of the mismanagement and hours. I feel like I was forced into quitting because of my age. Would love to join a class action lawsuit because of age.

Been there over 32 years. They took away our Dept. Manager jobs, forced into another position, was told we would get a lump sum for not getting bonuses anymore, never received it, then our new area got raises, we were to get $1 and now they refuse to give us that. Complain to HR and they have no answer, Store Manager...no answer, the HR's Boss said I was to get the raise and HR claims they had to send it to H.O. to look into? What BS.

I have always heard they treat their employees poorly. Now upon reading how horrible they truly are to their employees, I am definitely boycotting them!!!! Goodbye Walmart! 🖐

I've been at a walmart DC for two years now. We had one of the biggest snow storms in years. We got about 2 feet of snow with whiteout conditions. Some highways closed, and the state said travel would be impossible. Managers told our GM to close the warehouse four times and he stayed at home and kept the warehouse open. 180 people called in. The poor dumb b–tards who came in got stuck off the road, or if they did make it in, they couldn't make it home. One guy stayed in a hotel. Another slept in his car because all his routes home were closed. They people were risking their lives to make 200 bucks that day. It's such horse sh– when Walmart touts safety day in and day out but expects these guys to risk their life or their car to make 200 bucks? Especially when most of the guys would be willing to make up their hours another day and help other shifts push out more freight and eventually make up the difference by the end of the week. What a f—ing joke.

I was with Walmart for 26 years. I had an ADA accommodation that was permanent. However, with all of the changes, my job code was changed and I was told I needed to apply for a new ADA, as the accommodation could not be met under the new code. I did so, and was turned down for this new code. They offered me jobs I couldn't do because of mental issues and scheduling. I don't work days because I can't handle all those people. I'd k–l someone when I had a blackout due to anger disassociation disorder. They have my paperwork from two drs and a psychiatrist.
I finally had enough of the years of b—s—, and went in Thursday and quit. No notice, just 26 and out. It felt amazing. I didn't realize how much I hated walking through the door of that hellhole.

32 years with the company. I have never been written up or disciplined. All above average evaluations. I have worked in the same department as a supervisor working the same shift. I have built my life around the schedule and now I am told I will split my days off and close everyday. I was told the 32 years I have with the company is no more important than a new hire associate. What a piece of sh– company managed by money grubbing, lazy , cheap white shirt wearing losers. R.Moss

I was let go due to being accused of mis scanning items at the self checkout register. When new management came into my store I was being pulled in the office every week, accused also of not listening to a team lead when she told me to do a task on the front end, had been with the company for years. Several associates at the store I worked at were targeted just like me, all of those associates they have fired and denied unemployment, one of the associates that was targeted had a medical condition and was on loa, during her loa they fired her. Denied her unemployment and also decided mine.

I had worked for Walhell for 26 years. I found 2 stolen watches in the back room and turned them in to management. Around 3 weeks later I was told I had to return a headset that I had in my vest, I was told to return it and that would solve any issues. Since I was unaware of what they were referring to, I went home and looked in my other vest which was in my closet for who knows how long. I found what they were referring to and immediately took it back explaining I did not remember putting them in my pocket. I was told no problem, it happens to us all. Upon returning to my shift that night, loss prevention from another store and a pee on Mgr. called me in and I was promptly terminated. I have worked my a– off for this company for all those years only to get a huge slap in the face and be accused of something everyone who knows me, knows I am in now way, shape or form a thief. I at least left with the support of my co-workers standing by my side.

Been with walmart 9 yrs being a department managers / support manager / fresh superviser . most of that time trained countless other supervisors over the yrs that have moved up to asm . in the last yr i trained the bakery supervisor they mentioned there rate of pay to me . they had only been with the company 7 months and they were making 2 dollars more a hr then i was .. I was confused how does that work ... Same pay grade more expensive gets less pay . when this new team structure was implemented we both lost our positions and were dropped to the same pay grade however they lost only $1.20 pre hr were i lost $2.10 a hr again we are now the dame pay grade and also work in the same department. The store manager demoted all the department managers before the transition which made eligible for any team lead positions and prompted new hires with no retail experience at all and expect the veterans to train them .... The area of the store i work in is grossly under staffed . the company expacts the associates that are working in those areas work the new freight complete all price changes /mod changes /section work/cleaning . with an average of 500 piece of freight the company work sheet say will take 1 associate 8 hours to down stack ..90 price changes that will take 2 hour section work 2 hours cleaning 3 hours .working the capping process 3 hours you can see where im going with this .the math just doesnt work for the hours one associate is on the clock ...dont even think about taking a break you will be coached ...

I worked at walmart for only 4 years and made it from entry level to asm and I knew everyone and helped I wasn't a desk jockey. So while I was there I knew something was wrong so many managers coming and going being targeted etc.. I eventually found myself on the chopping block because I wouldn't do unethical things. The things they tell you to do is absurd. Like a conference call all management was on no emails allowed about it saying dont let associates wear face masks because it would scare customers until it was mandatory atleast. I had enough anyway but before I could leave I tried to do things and report everything to ethics well the new store manager fired me but atleast from what I heard they got themselves fired for theft. Everything that goes around comes around. If people are old enough there have been plenty of places like walmart that have done the same or worse that are now gone. It will happen again. From what people say because I refuse to shop at walmart again the store I was at is a disaster now. I guess ill sit back and watch walmart bleed money when all they have end up being people who hate there jobs

I was fired when an employee that I let move in with me told management and gave them a bag that had d–gs in it. they said it tested positive (that's what they told me) all because she admitted herself to the hospital, and didn't want anyone to know it was her best friend's mom that sold or gave her d–gs. she worked there for 2 years and i was there 9.9 years. management would not listen to me as i haven't even seen or talked to her in 2 months, she had blocked me when she moved out. she admits she is bipolar and has mental issues and they still believe her without listening to my side of the story. be careful and don't be friends with anyone, because if the customers don't get you fired the employees or management will make something up. spent 9 years dodging bullits from them but this one got me.

What on earth are they thinking? Is this some kind of social experiment? Because if they Greedy a– walton family reads this because there will be a rude awakening, as workers leave to work elsewhere than deal with the worst management I’ve ever dealt with.

Not to mention they didn’t hand out any Pandemic $ for workers except a lousy 90 bucks.

To George, the pharmacist from the previous post,

Congratulations on your recent retirement! Know that you are not alone. I am a former pharmacist who worked a cumulative 22 to 23 years for the Evil Empire. I too left a couple of years before I intended to do so because, after using 4 days of short term disability, my work was suddenly being nit picked by the cowardly and gutless MM's and RM's this company loves to promote because they actually enjoy doing the "dirty work" of belittling and terminating pharmacists so they can hire cheaper replacements.

Anyway, I found a job with an independent pharmacy to finish up my career and left before I gave them the satisfaction of firing me. It constantly amazes me how much more rewarding my job can be working in an environment where you are actually appreciated.

Last week, a local family practice physician with a very busy practice came in to get a pr-scrip-ion for a family member. When I greeted him, he surprised me by expressing a great appreciation for me and our pharmacy. He told me that he knew how stressful our job was because he had several patients who were pharmacists for Walmart and Walgreen's and they were all suffering from depression and stress due to their employers and their job. I told him of my experience with the Evil Empire and he told me that he loves our pharmacy because he never receives any complaints about us from his patients and that he actively tries to send his patients to us.

Again, congratulations on your recent retirement. You will be happier in one year than you are now. I left about 15 months ago and I know I am much happier now then I was back then.

Forget 'em. They're not worth the damage to your health.

I was forced into early retirement as a Pharmacist (Staff). I had planned to retire within the next 5 months. But I got tired of getting called into “ the principal’s office”. By mini-managers for taking weekend (1:30-2:00) lunches. By the HW district manager for trivial reasons. Accused of being too slow, when I was worked 80 % of pharmacist’s responsibilities. Stabbed in the back by technicians and they got extra hours and compensation so they would make up anything. I wish I could get more compensation for all the aggravation, heartache and mental trauma ( my Dr. said PTSD).

20yrs and they cut me 3 hours (not a lot... so far) while giving the new hires 40 and even overtime.
I told a Dept. Manager I was cut only 3 so far but at least I'm not getting fired.
She said "don't be so sure." She told me they are going to fire all the regular employees and have only department managers do all the back room and sales floor work.
This is in the middle of a pandemic!
Let the minors and part timers go. Give the new hires the tough options and support your damn long term employees!

Asst Manager went digging to find out what’s going on why everyone is being job eliminations. Found out a lot My job was on the list to go away. (Overnight manager) also found out store managers and market managers are next. They are grouping everyone into 4 categories if you fall in the bottom 25%(old, minority, longevity, etc) your otw out. The company plan is to hire part time young strong labor and set an intimidating scared to lose your job atmosphere. While there for no longer than 4-5 years they encourage you to attend their online college or learn a trade so you will move on and they can repeat the cycle. They call it workplace. That is possible because of simplifying and combining job roles and functions relying on technology to fill in where employees used to work. Long term plan is miniature warehouses with 10 or less associates per store maintaining robots. Don’t believe me just look up alphabot. Already does it all. Why there paying cashiers more right now because it’s just temporary long enough to go completely self check. Dept mgrs will become stockers once the out scanning bot works out kinks(already in stores). I asked my store manager to confirm what I had found( all on Walmart one) apparently store mgrs are in the dark too.knew this after I showed him they were next to be “restructured “. Same type evaluation for them and market managers. And if your region is like mine all the good ole boys are trying to move each other around to survive throwing everyone else(the actual workers) out to stay in the fight. Which is creating more strain on the few that do carry the load. Causing hire turnover and worse productivity. Just to give you an idea my store projected 127% turnover and we are not a seasonal store. But that was the whole market that I seen numbers on. Good luck Walmart I took my stock out years ago. Also speaking of, anyone else think it’s weird they’re stock hasn’t moved significantly in years? Even through the pandemic. I’m highly confindent some sandbagging is happening on a big level. They tell us in our Asm training only 40% of store are profitable but the stock increases consistently??? That’s weird. Also Homeoffice is reduced to rubble. All functions are trying to be thrown on store level(payroll, hiring, separation, open door ethics,) just to give an example the number on Walmart one for ulearn formerly cbls is a non working number. And they have third party sourced ethics, just FYI for anyone hoping to get answers when your job is eliminated. See a file for bankruptcy in Walmart’s future within 10 years they’ll be bailed out and rename with new ceo etc... don’t wait till it’s your turn make a plan and get out on your terms. There’s a reason Walmart did so well to get where it’s gotten and it’s the employees there letting go. I highly suggest unionizing if you plan on continuing to work there!!!!

Getting rid of long time employees? Do ya think?

It wasn't that long ago that a large portion of WMT people had 20+ years of service. Now if you've made it a year or two you're a senior employee.

That didn't happen by chance.

REPLY TO “March 20” posting from “ 60 YEARS OLD AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO “.

Suggest you seek LEGAL ADVICE as you may have a case against Wal-Mart as you have an injury which may place your employment under ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) rules and protections. Also may have a WORKMAN’s Compensation claim as well, especially if your shoulder was injured on the job; or if the job made it worse. Time may be a factor so seek advice soon.
Good Luck.
