Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Constant Ongoing Hiring & Bankruptcy Stock Up

It's been pointed out on this forum before that it's strange that a company constantly cutting employee hours and laying people off is actively hiring so many new employees. One of reasons on the store level must be if you don't get 'm now, you never will once bankruptcy is filed. Obviously even more long term employees will look to get out if there's an official filing and no one in their right mind would want to take their place.

I wouldn't apply to work for Sears right now and definitely not after an official filing.

Its the responsibility of the OM (if no OM then SM only) to remove people out of the system thru the 88 sears termination page. Its at this time at the stores discretion how you are terminated in the system (aka rehireable, non rehireable, whyd you leave, how much to pay out, sick days, vacations days etc).

If store management hasnt done this, the people stay in WFM aka the "ghosts"

mov- our store has had quite a bit of turnover this year as well. But our store manager is on top of making sure everyone is removed from the system. So I don't think it's a company thing, I think it's a lazy thing. Store manager can either choose to make it happen or not.

We have people on the official employee list that haven't worked in the store one hour since Feb or whenever that 1st extremely drastic cut to hours started. Some of them are happily working in New jobs at other companies. Wouldn't they normally be considered job separation -- job abandonment? But they are not. They are current employees for store record keeping.

I wonder if the official number of employees a company has when it declares bankruptcy means something?? There is some reason that benefits the company for doing this.

Maybe that's how they are getting shop your way sign ups! Lol

I bet it's because of a tax write off they can take for the expense of training.

Not just southeast im from the northwest we also are bringing in more new people with no extra hours i for the life of me can't figure it out ... the recruiter just put in 8 request for our store yet we have no hours to give them.... i was told no one from the store lvl asked them to do this ... so it has to be corporate telling them to do it .... any HR people on here can you give some feedback on this

1xmh- To not pay someone for training or orientation is illegal. File a claim with your local/state labor relations board. They used to try this at our store until the state labor board came in and did an audit. Never happened again.

In our store no one is given over 10 hours a week, yet, we are still hiring. Two months ago we hired 6 new people, did background checks and drug test, paid them for orientation and computer training. Then when they were ready to hit the sales floor they were give two hours per week for two weeks. Three quit on the first day after they saw their schedule and were told the hours would not increase until the holidays. One never showed for their first day and the other two were never on the schedule and called for a few weeks to see when they could start. That was over two weeks ago and haven't heard from them. We are now hiring more people just to not put them on the schedule. Is there some sort of tax break SHC gets from the states if they employ so many people? If there is then SHC is scamming the states. Store in the Southeast.

@amz, what is NCNS?

My store doesn't pay you for orientation if you don't start work. You are not in the system so you are conveniently forgotten about on payday. If you come to training only or work only a shift after that, I have heard that you don't get paid either but you should because now you're in the system unless no one told you how to punch in. Again, convenient.

I agree sears brings them in but it takes weeks to actully see the person by then they have already started another job ... this is costing sears , i believe 1,200 a person to get in here then they don't stay or never make it in ..... again another way sears as a company is failing and or wasiting money

@1cse, this is the case @ my store. There are postings for multiple jobs in the careers section of the Corp website, on popular internet employment boards, a banner hanging over one entrance to the store and a table set up at the other entrance with job information. Only one of these jobs needs someone because there isn't someone officially in the position. That job could be filled internally too because the job doesn't need too much training and currently employed associates are desperate for hours.

But people are being interviewed and hired. Most of them don't stay past training or the first shift when they see how little they will get to work and how disorganized we are as a company.

This is true in my email .... i saw 10 new job request for areas that are fully staffed and some already have interviews set up.... so why hire people where there are no hours to give them

@amz Thats one of the biggest problems about this company, When someone applies to Sears and they basically slap you on the face with your getting paid minimum wage and no chance of advancement they basically want to end it their and go apply else where. Some go through training go into the field and when they start finding out how bad it is they quit. I remember a very smart girl she worked hard was sharp and told me do I have chance of advancement I told her nope you might be lucky if you even get the full time.

We have hired nineteen people for just five positions in a two month span. Interviewed twice that amount in the same time frame.

The five positions were HA, HI, office, backroom and SL support (cashier/MCA). Out of those nineteen, NONE of them are still here. NONE. Zip. Zilch. Zero. They all quit before or during the onboarding/training. Most were a NCNS.

I wonder how much it costs the store and company to hire and onboard an employee, then having to pay wages for them to do orientation and training and never seeing a day of actual work?

I am one of the interviewing managers. I can't tell you how many times I was basically laughed at when the topic of pay came up (minimum wage). A lot of interviews were cut super short too, a lot of candidates walked out telling me "thanks, but no thanks". They end up at Target, Macy's, Lowe's or even Walmart with a higher starting wage.

It's real frustrating and a waste of time. An exercise in futility in trying to bring people in. The economy is getting stronger. Maybe I should jump ship and get in on the action?

I hard enough for my store to find people right now, I can't imagine what it will be like during bankruptcy. I wonder if that is actually the time to ask for a raise?
