Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Linux on SPARC dead

I work in porting dev. Have been let go as of last Friday, because Oracle has stopped Linux on SPARC.

I will not have any issues finding a linux dev position, but hurts that I wasn't even tried to be reabsorbed in other places within Oracle. My years of dev contributions have been forgotten. It's not my managers fault, but the company culture. HR is of course a cruel joke.

I wonder if SPARC is now officially dead, as now Solaris and now no Linux.

Can confirm Linux on SPARC is canceled. Solaris was canceled in December. Now they're pushing back timeline for next M-Series. Not looking good.

But that's the misunderstanding...SPARC is not being developed anymore to be used by anyone but Oracle cloud!!!! They have a stunning quarter and it makes sense to use Oracle's own hardware. Killing Linux on SPARC though is what does not make sense to me in any way.

Don't be childish. You are just a tool. Oracle has no culture of transitioning to-be-laid off employees around. Oracle wants to cut losses fast. I have seen dev team with down to 1 single developer who was the to-go-to person and cut. A weeks later, bugs starting to come in and looking for someone to support the product and then realized, that one last dev was cut. How dumb. Managers have no saying of who to layoff as far as I know. They get the list of names from top management. SPARC is dead. Hardly anyone using them seriously these days. Customers just afraid that one day Oracle pulls the plug.

All the sparc solutions sold as in Orem ha e been being migrated to a cloud "architecture" ... it's been taking a long time .

I Confirm. Linux on SPARC has always been under Fowler. The info I have is Linux on SPARC was put on hold but not cancelled. Maybe the new boss needs to reevaluate how to proceed on SPARC, but that does not mean in anyway that it is dead or that SPARC is dead. Letting one person go does not mean that the while HW division is dead.

I'm not sure where you get your info from but it's just plain wrong. All Linux development for SPARC is under JF and always has been. JF isn't leaving because his product responsibilities are growing. Please stop this fake news.

never seen so many wrong infos alltogether in the same thread...

Linux for SPARC was never under JF, it started (and died, yes confirmed) under ES with the re-hire of WC. many Solaris eng were moved from MF (JF org) under WC (ES org) to develop this Linux for SPARC.

was a nonsense then, now is demonstrated.

the only SPARC-Linux system existant has sold just a couple of units, nothing to worry about, and the few customers that bought it will have it replaced with Exa.

JF is out, now ES has full System responsibilities. JF was the only SPARC/Solaris sponsor in the past. MH, TK, DD, they never bought the SPARC/Solaris idea. now ES must decide when let it die.

No one is going to post their VPs name. Some really dumb people post on here.

From low performers not knowing how bonuses and stock grants are given to idiots asking for your directors title. (By the way director/m4 is a low job title). This whole site is amazing.

To the dope who posted: "Who was your manager? We need proof you were RIF'd" why don't you tell us your manager's name.

Why would they cancel Linux while its already running in sparc and ex data and generating money .

And why they lay off one person ? The Linux team is big , if that is true , there should be hundreds of people out .

Whoever wrote that statement should elaborate more and give more information .

Either way sorry that you were let go , but it would be nice if you let us know more so others don't freak out

Can confirm that Oracle linux on sparc is dead. Not sure what this means for other products under Fowler though.

"hurts that I wasn't even tried to be reabsorbed in other places within Oracle"

While it is difficult to do right now, try to start seeing that this wasn't a statement on your value. This is Oracle being Oracle -- shortsighted, uncaring and in a tough spot because customers are increasingly trying to get away from Oracle due to a long history of being a poor partner.

SPARC is dying. It was a great platform, but Oracle hasn't done it any favors. At this point, it is just on life support so that Oracle can continue to collect from customers who are willing to continue paying.

Getting let go always is an awful experience, but you will land on your feet with your experience. Go find a better position in a company with a better culture!

Where you the only one who let go? Are you assuming they ended Linux on sparc or you are speculating because they let you go?

If true, that means their systematically killing off everything under JF. The other 'Adieu JF' thread indicates they're getting rid of ZFS too.

But that doesn't make any sense. If that is the case then for sure sparc is dead.

Oracle support/service policies drive customers away. Larry said he wants to be like IBM...look at IBM today. Do you ever have any good to say about IBM support/service? It's not the people, it's the idiotic management that think they know everything looking at spreadsheets and fattening their bank accounts.
