Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

My two cents

I've been with Target for nearly 30 years, what we are seeing now in terms of leadership changes and "managing out" reminds me a lot of how Target used to be in the 90's and early 2000's. Then the push was insane growth and it happened fast and wasn't pretty. Strategies changed constantly and so did job titles and next level managers who then quickly decided who wasn't a good fit and bam, "managed out." In total Target has been a good place to work witn decent 401K, vacation etc. my personal polIcy has been to think of each position I have like it's is a competition, whatever I do I do it better than what is expected. If I see a process that makes no sense I FIRST look for a better solution to the issue and then present problem and solution together. It really has served me well.

I would like to talk to anyone to discuss age discrimination, the "plan", the "list" at Target that results in resignation, retirement or layoff. This has personally touched my family and I am reaching out to anyone to understand the corporate world at Target. Has this impacted you, are you worried for your job, your coworker's job? I am not a troll an outsider or any other name some may think to call me. I am trying to understand the corporate world at Tgt and the devastation left for my family. If you can't offer me information or just want to bash me please don't respond. I cry enough tears. Thank you.

2kmv - Good post, well put. This is true. Most people are not being offered any kind of package. I am aware of one person that was actually told by upper management that they could hire a kid out of college to do the work in half the time at half the money. If that isn't age discrimination I don't know what is.

"Generational diversity will soon be extinct at Target" not sure that matters. Target needs people to get the job done,,,period! First job. Target is great for us that are building our skills and resumes to move on. Loyalty is generational, no longer required. Target is a great...enjoying the ride.

Hey complete BS 2iyx you are either still selling the cool aid or out of the loop, there are code words and understandings used as well as tests for certain positions that cover concepts not in use by Target and favor new grads

What are some of the signs that you are being managed out? I am constantly feeling like I am being given impossible tasks so I'm set up for failure. Yet when I did the impossible multiple times last fiscal year, I got dinged on my review because I was occasionally stressed out while doing multiple jobs and not the standard Minnesota fake happy. I am only a few years into working at Tgt hq.

2kmv: calling complete BS on your contention that TM's are being targeted based on age. Planning meetings are happening, I was just in one Friday. Agr and tenure have nothing to do with them. Attitude, interaction and results yes.

Yes it is true, there is a list! Managers are being coached weekly to complete the process. Many of the "managed out" employees have been "TARGETED" due to age and years of service; however it is being balanced out with a few token younger team members to avoid age discrimination. Target is very clever to avoid law suits...maybe this effort of perfection should have been used to keep Target more competitive instead. The percentage of 60+ year old employees with 30+ years of employment are are being managed out is very high. This is a silent layoff with a majority being a targeted group of people. Since this is not an official layoff, statistical data does not need to be provided or made public, Target has provided a few team members with small token packages to keep them from discussions and unifying any public declarations.

Generational diversity will soon be extinct at Target.

Performance issues do exists and need to be addressed; however "managing out" is not the ethical solution for the majority of these people; many were setup by being placed and promoted into positions without the skills and aptitude to succeed. An early retirement package offering would have been the more respectful option.

This is very disturbing for all.

1lub - That's rich. It's not a competition? Here's a little inside info, you are ranked against your peers regularly in planning meetings and then formally once a year. Enjoy the cabin!

Huh, my strategy has been to not work hard - it's NOT a competition - and wait until they promote me again. So far so good. Hey, there's an eagle (working from cabin today).

To the original poster - good for you on thirty years. Keep your two cents to yourself and retire.

You probably work in HR anyway. Must be a joke for "you all" in your stand-ups as you talk about what you are going to do for the day. "I'm going out to the garden and pull some more weeds"

The people that are being "managed out" get the grunt work and troublesome tasks having risk and probability of failure. That gives managers an easy out when they get the tough questions from their leaders on why something failed.

I've heard there is some list of employees that are being managed out that is shared out among TTS Managers. If you are on the list you have no internal options for moving to a new position.

Going to work everyday Should not Feel Like being on the reality show "Survivor"

That's my Two Cents

Actually, I am smart. You don't retire and go into retirement. You simply "retire" from Target and get another job. If you find another job and quit, Target gives you nothing. If you find another job and "retire" from Target, then you get all your vacation pay and everything else. You don't have to give them any more than 2 weeks notice.

So, I am not an idiot. I found a way to leave on my terms. There have been many of us who left this way. Since they changed the vacation policy beginning Jan. 1 that they will not pay out vacation time. We had been there long enough that we still had a lot of accrued vacation.

So before you call people idiots, look up the facts in the Target policies. I "retired" from Target, did not start my pension (which I could have but will wait until I am 65), my 401k is still intact and I actually got a better job.

Point, set, match. Tell your mommy when you come up from the basement!

ouw,

You are an ignorant idiot for suggesting people retire at 55 with 10 years of service. Retirement requires much more planning than that!

Here's a nice to know loophole:

If you are 55+ and have been with TGT for 10 or more years, you can retire!

That means you get paid for all your accrued vacation and still get the 10% bonus. Plus they will give you a $50 Target gift card and say happy retirement.

If you feel you are being managed out, it is an option to consider. At least you get paid for all your vacation versus just leaving it on the table and getting $0 if you quit or the fire you.

My recommendation would be to either make their life hell, or just leave without notice. TGT doesnt deserve your talent and effort

30 years, that's a long time. Hopefully Target stays around and keeps you until you decide you are ready to leave. Good luck friend!
