Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

layoffs and kool-aide cannot hide bad decisions forever

Leadership consistently fails to adapt. To put it simply... they got old, their ideas are old.

These times require game changers. They require re-examining decisions of the past, not stubbornly insisting on them and ignoring reality

Outside-the-box thinking is not encouraged in an atmosphere of petty dictators, yes-men and yes-women. Apparently there are many in upper and middle management who do not wish to change the status quo except as it relates to low level and union employees.

This company is behind the times in just about every way compared to the modern companies they seek to emulate. They are behind the times philosophically!

The greatest problem facing this company is not the union or t-mobil, it is the leadership, it is time for someone to re-evaluate the entire operation and make new decisions that make sense.

I would like to know whose brainchild onetalk is/was...they should be immediately promoted for their vision and leadership! Best product ever. So glad we have such great marketing geniuses to come up with all these wonderful products that work so well.

Sorry i did not mean to appear compare myself in any way to the obviously superior and godlike VZ upper management!

Clearly they are my betters in every way and intrinsically worth more as human beings than I am. Clearly important and powerful people never make mistakes. Clearly go90 is a success, that I am too ignorant and peasant-like like to understand.

I am lucky people like Lowell McAdam even allow me to exist! I should get down on my knees every day and thank him and people like him for this wonderful, beautiful paradise we all get to live in.

Thanks Lowell!

@1jkd, sometimes the view from the trenches is limited at best, and does not offer a complete picture? My feeling is that those at higher ranks enjoy a vantage point from which the big picture can be more easily viewed and, though we may not understand each and every move, there is logical reasoning that drives what we're doing and where we're going. Please have a little faith, and understand decision-makers did not get to where they are by mere chance, but rather on a record of decisive, successful delivery of results. Give it time. After all, Rome was not built in a day. It's easy to complain. It's far harder to make a difference.

I saw a video of an Apple employee complaining years ago about where Apple was headed and questioning Steve Jobs vision. If he could have foreseen where Apple is now, I am quite certain he would have reserved his premature judgment, as his concerns of yesteryear, unfortunately for him, show he wasn't completely envisioning the big picture, the vision, but was instead focused on his corner of the world. http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-jobs-reaction-to-insult-2015-10

"Why doesn't lowell and co. Just sell off the landline side to a company which could appreciate having a solid wireline, fios areas or sell it all off, fios and copper. Just get out of the landline business completely?"

Well, a lot of that has happened, in my time first selling off Hawaii (2005), then parts of the NE to Fairpoint, (2007) then 13 states and DC to Frontier (2011), then FL,TX and CA to Frontier (2015)

So a lot has already gone (all of the old GTE properties and some others). Yes, the NE Corridor is still here, but I am sure it will go IF they can find a buyer for who the economics makes sense.

Agreed, great post and replies. Why doesn't lowell and co. Just sell off the landline side to a company which could appreciate having a solid wireline, fios areas or sell it all off, fios and copper. Just get out of the landline business completely? Then lowell and co. Could concentrate on what their baby is, 5G, and unload the union contracts, workers, etc.? Honestly? Unload it since it's obvious they don't want it? I know there would be buyers. Answers??? Anyone???

where is our winning strategy?

Wireless: Q2 was good, we are told, because offering the unlimited plan stopped the bleeding. But VZ had to be dragged kicking and screaming to finally offer unlimited. Is this not the definition of stubborn leadership?

Nor was this the first time in wireless that vz was forced to contradict themselves and finally offer what the public had wanted all along. Remember contracts?

Just an idea...What might have been if instead of being one of the last companies to offer unlimited data (after the rise of data above voice), instead if VZ had been the first company to again offer it when data came into higher demand than voice minutes? Back when "network superiority" was more noticeable? It would have cost money, but if VZ had re-introduced unlimited data back then, would T-Mobil have been able to grow?

Wireline: Continues to be an apparent afterthought at best to current leadership, at worst they seem to regard it as an undesireable expense. Nevertheless, there is a high public demand for fast wireline (fiber) broadband. It seems Verizon could be the undisputed leader in this area providing the fastest home and business broadband if they were willing to make the investment. But the interest is half-hearted at best. In this area too, VZ ignores the desire of the public. People want high speed no frills internet pipe pure and simple.

Meanwhile VZ keep devising new versions of the old cable bundle, trying to sell customers voice lines and entertainment content most do not want driving up the price of FIOS, but losing customers who are value conscious. This customer loss is increased by offering attractive packages to new customers but not to loyal existing customers. What might happen if Verizon focused on being the fastest pipe and offering a great no frills high speed data connection? Here is an area where "better still matters"... could the cable companies compete for pure speed? An industry leading product marred by tone-deaf marketing, it is almost as if they want FIOS to fail.....

Media, Advertising, Data Mining: As we all know, VZ have made large purchases in an effort to compete with online companies who require ISP's to operate. Of course, unlike these companies VZ actually IS an ISP. Can VZ be both ISP and OTT and compete with these businesses? So far, go90 has not been much of a success, despite getting favored child status..Now on to the next favorite..OK I admit I am not really sure what exactly the heck OATH is doing besides having a silly name, so far we haven't heard anything....

On the other hand, you have to wonder why another company (LINKNYC) will be offering free wifi throughout New York City, and using Verizon's old payphone network!

Why isn't Verizon the company providing this free wifi? There goes a lot of advertising and data mining monies on a property Verizon already owned!

(Not to mention, what will the effect be on wireless cellphone plans when free wifi becomes abundant in major metro areas, has anyone in the Ivory Tower considered that?)

HUM: .......not really that exciting is it?

Can VLSS fix any of that? I didn't think so...ok then, back to tormenting the employees and destroying morale!

Situation Normal!

VLSS? Another old idea big hit from 2005. What are they gonna do now? Make everything worse?

The problem is poor leadership not waste.
