Fortunately the Sparc layoff today was greatly exaggerated, and not the 50% reduction some said would happen, but I still think the big layoff will be soon...

As a customer, I wouldn’t invest or buy any M8 system given this layoff.
todays layoffs were almost 95% if not more in SPARC/HW . all gone but few people that can be counted on your fingers
I must say the OP was quite right.... actually 50% is greatly exaggerated and a fake news indeed... the reality is that the layoffs in the SPARC / Solaris dev were close to 75%, and in some cases 90% with just a couple of people remaining under a VP. a couple of VPs also gone.
so, kudos to the OP, 50% is exaggerated and fake news indeed. the reality has been much worse.
No, I am not in SCA, Austin or BUR, that's why I was asking.
At least 99% SPARC are gone today. If are in SCA, Austin or BUR, you would know. If you are not, no need to guessing.
Are you saying there is no one left in SCA and BUR in SPARC???? The entire SPARC group was RIFed???
SPARC is not on it's way out. SPARC is dead. There is no one left on the HW side to develop or support the processor.
Clearly, the OP doesn't know anyone in SPARC...
This is not fake news - the SPARC firmware group was heavily hit.
Me thinks SPARC is going down the IBM POWER route...yes we accept orders if a customer insists on buying but we don't put much effort in anything after M8
P8 is a decent CPU, it still has its niche market and it is still being bought. Exactly the same can hold true for M8 which is a very good chip and there are a lot of application areas but it is not the future...
IBM hardware divisions went through a layoff like this some time ago, and like us they aren't done yet
Hopefully Mark Hurd following this guy

to those saying it's fake news: please, show some decency... if you have, that is.... almost all my friends in ME and Solaris are gone. some teams have been completely wiped out. some hugely impacted, with just a couple of people remaining. this has been massive.
re M8 and people needed for support.... I must be dumb, sure thing, but I cannot imagine a customer buying an M8 or an M8SC, investing M$ today in a dead technology and knowing that in 2-3 years they will be forced to move to another platform. much better invest in porting the current SPARC IB to IBM or x86.
It is obvious that SPARC is on the way out. The slow drip of layoffs is a cheap trick to avoid making the layoffs public and perhaps also to save on some severance money (a lot of engineers already see the writing on the wall and will quit on their own ).
They're stretching out the layoffs to avoid WARN notices
This is probably true. M8 & SC-M8 will hitting customers soon, so they still need majority of SPARC team to deliver atleast the next 1-2 sustaining releases, after that its just a slow painful death. So, expect another round of layoff around Jan/Feb timeframe
Who survived? Everybody I know in sparc is gone.
That place close soon .. sfter this lay off
I was laid off, and the nice old man on the phone said that M8 is a huge success and will be supported for years to come. So the lucky go-getters that will have the dream job of supporting M8 will get to stay at Oracle at least until 2022.
like others have said this is FAKE news designed to get people worked up
