I left DEC/Compaq/HP/HPE after 20 years total. It just got uglier and uglier over the years, and a big part of it was management telling us that we were very lucky to have such high paying jobs still. Once I finally looked out the window, I was able to jump over to a job paying substantially more, with a lot more enjoyable and meaningful work, I walked away from the severance promises, left four weeks of vacation pay on the table, and just left. Huge weight off my shoulders not wondering how many threads were holding the sword dangling over my head.
It was great working there for the first 10 years, then as soon as today's profit became much more important than tomorrow's innovation, it got ugly. Those of you still there and worried, look for a new position outside, buff up your skills if you have to, but just get out, and sell your brain cycles to someone who really wants them.
