The real issue

Nike was too slow in reacting to changing dynamic of consumer preferences over the past 3 years. This is for both products offered, and how they are offered. Adidas on the other hand fully understood this and is flourishing. This is the external market dynamic that led to the company downsizing. How did Nike's stable of strategists not forecast and react against it?

There is also an internal dynamic that is in play. The culture is bad. Executives will discount this and tell their teams it isn't true. Everyone just stares at them with dead eyes. What makes the culture bad is a combination of several things. One is accountability. It is difficult to pinpoint who is responsible for tasks at Nike. Another is fiefdoms. Nike departments are territorial and paranoid of each other. A certain passive aggressive undertone is always present. Yet another is that there isn't a level playing field. Nike does big things around equality but the reality is that you are popular with the correct person and you get the breaks. It has nothing to do with output, race, s-xual preference. It is about the marketing campaign you run for yourself. Hiring is a problem. Nike hires all wrong now. It hires for pedigree rather than cultural fit (would this person be a good teammate?). The company is filled with sharks now. They ate all the fish. Now they will eat each other. Can you imagine feeling secure in that environment? No? Most of Nike isn't either. Many have referred to the issue of not making waves with leaders. If you disagree with them it is the start of the end of your career. This is true.

Last week was the end after almost 5 years. I worked as hard as possible every day. Often I worked 12 hours days and watched coworkers go home after 6. They are still there and I am gone. Why? Because they played the game better. They schooled the system and s---ed up to the right people. I openly questioned things and was labeled as difficult. Nike can improve the product and turnaround times and it fixes half the problem. The other half is that the company spirit is broken. What I wouldn't give to sit down with leaders and to give them honest assessments of what is really going on and who is really doing what. They are to busy staring at their own reflection in the mirror and practicing their TED Talk poses. Hope they snap out of it and bring Nike back to its roots. That will be harder now that they have let go so many veterans that did the REAL work and drove the REAL culture.

OP- I couldn't agree with you more. I had a very similar situation. Had I kissed the right *sses I'd still be there. There is only one was to succeed at Nike. You have to fully drink the koolaide and believe that the luckiest day in your life was the day you joined Nike. I'm sorry, but Nike was lucky to have me and I'm a smart enough person that will not ignore BS when I see it. To those of you still there- good luck, but I certainly don't think this last round will have magically fixed what's wrong any more than the previous rounds did.

I can think of several directors that have teams but don't manage them. No 1:1's, no team meetings, no direction or expectation setting. They Are supposed to build strategies but never do. They frequently travel all over the world on nike dime and post their adventures to instagram. Nothing but a good time ever comes out of it, this is the accountability issue spoken of earlier. Leaders above are too disconnected.

Why did you accept such outrage? That is sixty hour a week. I hope that you were paid hourly and with overtime to justify the sacrifice of self and family. If you were paid salary, they took advantage of you, which is despicable.

I truly dislike to hear this. At times I think that the American worker is really dumb by accepting a job without a contract and on a time and material basis EXCLUSIVELY!

Employment at will as they say in the law. They created that law for a reason. That is to rip everybody off!

I was hired into Nike based on global textiles industry experience of 15 years. 12 hour days were dictated by the work that needed to be done. Hard projects were assigned to me because of my track record of completing them. Technology was no part of the issue at all.

Question for you. Who told you or demanded of you to work 12 hour days?

In my opinion, either your project managers don't have the slightest idea on how to calculate man hours to a project or you weren't competent for the task at hand, or it was a technology learning curve or if it was a large project where other teams were not prioritizing properly or there was too much damn red tape in your organization to get things done. Chances are all of the above and plenty more.

So, you have an organizational problem paired with a temporary worker help learning curve about how the organization wants to do, does things, together with perhaps unreachable milestones in a set amount of time or too many changes happening simultaneously. All these factors affect your action and/or reaction to market changes.

Don't blame the managers, the VPs, The CEO or anybody. Just refuse to work for incompetence. Create your own enterprise. Working for somebody else enterprise, will have you in the losing end every time.

If you account for productivity loss due to small talk, talent gone and anxiety, Nike probably will lose more money that they are saving with the measure and great talent will go somewhere else where it is respected and treated as a partner and an important part of the success of the company.
