Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Ongoing low-key layoffs at Western Digital

Won't talk for Irvine in particular, but from recently-ex'd colleagues theres an on going low level of layoffs on SSDs. Larger numbers marked for removal next 3-9 months because of consolidation after MOFCOM is lifted and SSDs forcing the HDD roadmap down to capacity enterprise models only. Opposite to what senior management are saying for sales and engineering, with the shrinking of the HDD roadmaps and the MOFCOM consolidation there are too few roles to accommodate everyone.

Unfortunately, when consumers have a choice of a $250 1T ssd that will be severly outdated in 3 or 4 years, and a $60 2T Seagate hdd that will simply be replaced in 2 years with a bigger $60 hdd, they will pick the hdd.

I've come to the realization that management made too many fatal errors surrounding Toshiba-gate.

Had they done their job, we would have the supply chain needed to be a key player in the world's conversion to ssd. Now we are just a fifth-wheel, waiting for the fab6 'gift' to materialize. In the meantime, layoffs and cost cutting measures that affect mainly the lower ranks will undoubtedly be stepped-up.

Good luck to all. I suspect we'll need it.
