A strong manager will avoid massive layoffs by hiring well, training thoroughly, and supporting his/her staff through difficult times.
A weak manager makes sure he/she gets paid first and best, and in times of adversity takes the path of least resistance by reducing headcount.
A massive loss on the scale we've seen at ORCL is a clear indication of weak, directionless management and failure of leadership.
It's unfortunate - the original decision to purchase Sun seemed visionary at the time.
I strongly suspect that MH was really fired from HP for destroying it, and the board used the affair as an excuse, to distract from the total disarray that MH inflicted on HP. Had things being going swimmingly at HP, what's her face would have been paid handsomely to keep quiet about the affair.
