Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

A view from Wilmington

Captial One is very competitive, very political and has the ultimate cutthroat environment. Currently, we are in a massive "redeployment" mode – you should replace the word “Redeployment” with the word “Layoff” as it’s synonymous. Not sure if it matters, keep in mind that Capital One pays the best severance in the industry – trust me on this one, this is my fight large financial services employer…

The bad part is that no matter what at some point you will become too expensive for Capital One and some manager somewhere will put your head on the chopping block. While you watch this unfold (your head being slowly lowered for a chop) – there will be a steady stream of new college hires walking in, each one of them is eying your position…

Cross calibrations, performance reviews are a year round process – OK, for some this may be a good thing – yet it is all based on comparisons to your peers throughout the company who are all working on different types of projects (so, how accurate the comparison will be – OK, I worked on a tweak to CSS for this micro-site, and you were changing ERP system for 1000s of users – how do you compare the two)…. So, this means it is a back room process with your manager fighting for you (if you are lucky) with the other managers – the outcome of the fight will determine your raises & promotions. I got f---ed this way two times – I am kind of fed up…

a) To sum it up, there are layoffs, there will be layoffs.

b) It’s a dog eats do world, watch your back

c) You will be ranked, and at some point, possibly yanked…

Happy Monday!
