Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

GE Six Sigma

Its hard to believe that GE management was stupid enough to replace technology experts with six sigma black belts at every level of management. Now power can't make any money

Look what they did to the ability to execute, and cost structure of the business.

Now Power can't make money despite $7.41 Billion in sales

GE is turning into a failed company because of bad management that is disconnected and knowledge of the business.

Six sigma promoted these type of opportunists who just wanted t get ahead, instead of become experts and grow.

GE Power is a failed business now, and is dragging down the entire company because of inexperienced management who just don't have the skills and knowledge and just focus on making charts and graphs instead of doing and understanding real work

The Japanese assumed you would continue to use common sense and technical knowledge alongside 6 sigma. They obviously never thought someone would use it the way GE did. But GE leadership over the past decades could probably mess up a wet dream. Don't blame 6 sigma for that.

All these people were morons and the japs didn't know what they were doing. 6 Sigma is the mother of all tools if you want a disaster on your hands.

A tool, Lean Six Sigma, is a Total Quality System collection of how to optimize products and processes. If you don't think that Deming, Juran, and others like the Toyota Production System are critical techniques to succeed in manufacturing look at Pittsburgh, Sharon/Farrell, Youngstown/Warren where the steel industry boomed until Japan took these techniques and killed the steel industry. The observance here should be that the leaders should be what is deemed "Brown Belts" where they have subject matter expertise within their knowledge domain, and fewer full "Black Belts" that only know the toolsets. Six Sigma is a tool, and should be used in conjunction with other knowledge and expertise, not it's own credential to lead.

Even a monkey knows that six sigma is baloney and doesn't work. Why does there need to be any more discussion.

Six sigma promotes the fantasy that you don't need experts because we have procedures that a monkey can use to do the job.

This has led to trashing the technical capabilities and expertise within GE with huge cost of quality and bad decisions that have now destroyed GE. GE needs to get back to its roots of being a company of excellence and value added activities instead of a low quality marker upper of outsourced materials.

You cant replace experts with people who aren't, and not manufacture and provide good service anymore under the guise of six sigma - it doesn't work

GRC still has a plethora of 6-sigma people. They are now teaching some other bull-t classes as well, miraculously becoming expert in those fields overnight. It feels like they are really trying hard to prove that they are useful, except they are not.

It is a wrong diagnosis about six sigma and the comments made are absurd.

Whoever blamed Sixsigma ..may like to do RCA and find the real cause rather than Projections on SS.

The main culprits are this pseudo six sigma BB and the favouritism tinged HR.

Leaving the people management into HR has lead to this current situation and the cookedup data in six sigma metrics by pseudo Blackbelts accelerated the downfall

Does anyone have a manager at GE who is an expert, can do the work in the group, and knows what they are doing? Its so hard to believe that a company as prestigious as GE used to be could screw up so badly.

Why doesn't upper management and the board recognize this other than they are disconnected from the workings from the ground up.

Virtually all GE managers and those in positions of authority were six sigma types and few if any have any deep knowledge of the business or expertise. And have little interest.

GE is failing miserably by all metrics - quality, innovation, technical excellence, and service of our products. GE doesn't even make anything, they just try to assemble parts made by others.

Six sigma has destroyed what once made GE great and now they can't make money because their costs are too high doing business the six sigma way

My manager has no clue what I do. To be honest, I am sick of training new managers. My manager wouldn’t understand if I tried to explain what I did. Too inexperienced and disconnected. I’m glad he spends all day in conference room meetings so I can actually get my work done.

The actual problem now is inept managers and team leaders. How can someone manage a group of people when they have no idea exactly what it is the group does? Let’s “simplify” the way things have always been done because “i say so”. Why the wait (October) to move people to Field Core? Who in their right mind is jumping on that? People do not work their entire professional lives to accrue credentials and certifications that allow them to advance only to have them overlooked and start all over again below square one. Greed and arrogance continue to abound at GE.

Greenville manufacturing still does Six Sigma. Engineers stopped long ago. Manufacturing even forces facilities managers who keep the toilets flushing and floors mopped to do at least one six sigma project per year and two Nike projects. We have been claiming fake savings for decades. Most projects were already completed and Six Sigma was used after the fact to document the "savings". If six sigma projects are started when your project is complete, six sigma had nothing to do with the savings. But dump GE Leaders were convinced that SIX SIGMA DID IT.

HR manages most BB's or MBB's if Flannery who is the part of the problem wants to fix this should let go entire HR

And where do you think those MBB's are today? If they're still in the system, they're definitely part of the problem.

You or someone keeps venting about Six Sigma as if that is the root cause of the current challenges. Six Sigma and picking MBB's for promotion ended just after Jack Retired so it has no bearing on our current condition.
