Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Please clear up a question if you have confirmed info

I am someone that was impacted and waiting on an answer from HR4U. If we get released early from our position can we start another job(outside of Humana) before our severance date and we send in our paperwork back and can we still get our severance? If the answer is no.. do anyone know how they can confirm that a person is working... do they check social security administration or what? I do want my severance for being displaced but I would feel like I had some vindication if I found a job before my severance started and got paid by severance.

You cannot receive unemployment and severance at the same time. Humana didn't plan for stretched out severance because they know we have secured unemployment. It saves them taxes

This was the comment: "I would suggest that you dont pad your bank account that you go straight to the shredder and destroy your severance agreement now."

What did you mean by that? Shredding the severance agreement would mean not getting money? Help me understand how I can support my entire family on one income if I put my severance in the shredder box? I can't understand why anyone would do that, help me understand where you are coming from here.

Read the entire post from bottom up, not my first rodeo.

I and in a different department at Humana and not the HAH group and I was told of my layoff on Monday Nov 7th and my term date is 1/5/18. I heard today the group with a 1/2/18 term date have been told they don't need to return after 11/22 via an email today and now I wondering if my group should expect to get the same email next week? This is so hard and stressful and I just don't understand why!!!!!

Qcj8o3P-5wjg.....The shredder comment was for the poster that said that we just want to pad our bank account with the severance.. Next time read the entire content before calling names better yet read the thread from the bottom to the top before adding in your 2 cents. Glad you are walking away with 30,000.....

I can't understand the other poster 2 below this why you want us to take our severance to the shredder box. Do you have a brain in your head. What is your problem? If someone handed you a paycheck with 30,000 on it, would you put it in a shredder box? Either you are extremely stupid, have brain damage, or having a hard time accepting your RIF. For those of us who have not known anything but Humana for 15 years, this will be a HUGE shock. It may take us 6 months to get back into another job. Also, some of us who have been here most of our careers are completely stunned and shocked. I was offered severance, and my package and PTO will be a substantial amount (yes, the 30,000 as mentioned above). I put blood, sweat and tears here and since Humana offered this EXTREMELY GENEROUS offer, it will not go in the shredder box, it will go straight into my bank account, I say thank you Humana for two decades of employment!

I guess you and I just look at things differently. I don't look for the doom and gloom in these situations. That just doesn't help. I have financially prepared for emergencies like this. I am more than grateful for all that Humana is offering me in this RIF but don't feel they owe me. Sorry if I'm not bitter and resentful but rather appreciate for what I am being given.

3kkh I know that Humana pays severance every 2 weeks instead of a lump Doewas speaking of other companies pays their employees severance in a lump sum which allows you to start your unemployment earlier if it is needed. Humana has figured that part out too by stretching it out over a number of months because they know we will have secured unemployment.

Looks like you have a very positive attitude about being laid off.. I doubting that you were RIFed.. I think that you are just a troll on this site..

I would suggest that you dont pad your bank account that you go straight to the shredder and destroy your severance agreement now.

I was the poster who commented about padding your bank account and yes I was laid off as well. I just don't have a sense of entitlement as most in here have. I am thankful to get severance, don't get me wrong.

And you do know that severance is paid every 2 weeks just like your paycheck? Because of this, you will not be able to collect unemployment until you are done collecting severance.

Thanks for responding to the "pad your bank account" statement. It was all I could do but walk away from the computer.. The idiotic remark is a person that wasnt involved in the RIF.. Also if anyone read the Louisville article Humana stated that they will have to pay out 124 million in severance and earlier retirement benefits but stated that they would recoup it in the first half of the year... SO WHAT DID THEY LOSE.... Also severance isnt "welfare" or an "entitlement benefit" It is given to you because you were separated from your job which it isnt the person fault. Also severance is usually paid in a lump sum not paid out every 2 weeks. Did your mother every teach you that if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all.

Severance ending a connection with someone or something. Severance pay is provided when ending a connection with an employer. If Humana offers you "severance pay," take it! It has nothing to do with "padding our bank accounts" as the other poster stated. Regardless of if you get another job tomorrow or in 6 months, if you are offered severance in a contract, it is yours as part of separation of your employment. Enjoy the extra pay if you are lucky enough to get a job quickly. I think the other poster is mad because he/she was not in the RIFF and wasn't offered money to leave. Look at it this way...if you left on your own, you won't get severance pay at all. This has been a very stressful year, and I was looking for another job anyway. This way, I know my "official" release date, I was told I would be released 2 weeks sooner anyway so help me transition in a new job. This gives me 2 weeks of paid vacation at Christmas and New Years! Plus with my PTO and severance, I get 16 weeks of pay, plus can take unemployment! Let's face it-this is a gift! My health is suffering here, it has not been a pleasant year. Humana just lit a fire under me to get up and do something bigger and better!

Once your laid off you are as good as gone. It’s not like they are going to release you and then call you back. I wouldn’t pass up a job

Please wait until you receive your response from HR. MF stated in a meeting that they didn’t want to prevent anyone from getting a job if laid off. They also stated that it would ok to accept a position and there wouldn’t be any issues with getting severance. Who knows it’s not like we haven’t been lied to in the past. When it comes to your money and your life dont take advice from an anonymous site get something in writing (from management or HR)

To clarify, if you are not "available" to Humana through January 2, then you technically "resign", then yes, you forfeit your severance pay. So if you take another job outside of Humana, and they call you back in before January, that could pose a problem getting your severance. Does that make more sense? As long as you remain "employed" by Humana, reporting to work or not, you are "theirs" through January 2, and THEN you can get your severance pay.

Severance is yours whether you save it or need it to pay bills. Unemployment is available after if needed. I’m sure they clarified it in one of the meetings once you have been released (even if it’s early) you are free to find employment elsewhere. You only forfeit your severance if you take a role within Humana.

OP, once you are released from humana you are free to work anywhere you want without jeopardizing your severance. There is no way for Humana to know you are working elsewhere. And honestly, if you do get another job, you don't need your severance. Severance is given to assist those while they look for work not to pad your bank account.

Can you take some of your PTO prior to January 2nd? I would request it without an explanation. If it was denied, I would be very honest with my immediate superior because, at least where I am at, they may get creative to assist you into a better situation. It's worth a try. Otherwise, I would wait or, talk to my new employer. Having managed many of my own companies, the WORST time to hire new employees is during the holidays. They may be willing to wait until after the first of the year. Also, in light of this, if some of your are discouraged, a large number of companies do wait until after the first of the year to do their hiring. It cuts down significantly on paperwork, W2s, benefits dilemmas, etc. Don't get discouraged. Usually lots of new positions open first quarter of the year. Best of luck.

Wow....the OP got difference scenarios... Did anyone start a job after getting released and signed their severance package and got their severance pay from Humana? I am just wondering just in case I get released early and find and start before January 5th if I can still sign for my severance?

Your severance is ONLY forfeited if you found a job within Humana. If it’s outside of Humana - you keep your severance:)

Ok, I was impacted too. It sounds like you are Humana at Home, and I was with a different line at Humana, so my end date is different than yours. I WAS TOLD if they "release" me before my official end date in January, I will be paid thru those remaining 60 days, my PTO will be paid on my last paycheck, and my severance will begin. I WAS TOLD if I am released before the 60 days is up, I am still an employee and can still look for work internally and apply internally. You are no longer needed in a regular work role and do not have to report to work w/I the 60 days. When you are released you are released, and are free to do what you want. They confirmed this in the meeting. From what I understand the severance package is extremely extensive and outlines all this in detail. I am still waiting for mine, have inquired when it will come (I was told w/I one day and it is no where to be found) and no one from HR4R has responded to my email since Wed am.

There are meetings that are being offered for impacted staff that are extremely informative about all these questions people are posting. My leader's leader emailed me the flyer to attend a meeting. I am hoping to stay, but in another role though. I would be interested to hear other impacted staff from other RIFF's if they were offered to transition to a new role & how many actually did successfully. How long has it taken other RN's to find a job after the RIFF?

You are still employed full time with Humana till Jan 2nd. My understanding is if you take another job before the start of your severance pay starts you will forfeit the money.

No. The severance pay is only voided if you take another job within Humana. You do not have to wait until the end of your 60 day notice to take a job outside of Humana. If you find another job outside Humana, you still get your severance pay.

I understand what the OP is asking... How will they find out? Humana didnt care about letting people go right at the holidays.. sometimes employers dont want to wait that long for a person to start...
