That any person who claims to hold liberal views on equality, freedom, human rights, secularism etc. could possibly view the concept of a hijab or other similarly illiberal aspects of Islamism with anything other than contempt beggars belief. Have you ever actually seen a woman wearing a berka or niqab out shopping or whatever, it's dehumanizing, to say the least.
In most cases, the hijab is a tool used to oppress women. Just because a woman in the US chooses to wear such thing does not change the facts of the matter. As a former Muslim woman myself who has family in Iran, I can tell you from personal experience that the progressive left's celebration of the hijab is not reciprocated by many women in the Muslim world.
The last poster makes a good comparison. As a feminist myself, I find it incredibly oppressive that the patriarchal power structure in the US and other prominently Christian Western cultures forces all women to wear bathing suits whenever they are out in public under the threat of violence and incarceration. At least here in the US we are allowed to choose to wear a one piece if we prefer, unlike those fundamentalists in French who insist that bikinis are the only appropriatve thing for a woman to wear.

The entire Barbie Team needs to be replaced by Oompa Loompas (if it weren't such an insult to the Oompa Loompas). You have to actually FACE THE PROBLEM before you can fix it - and the biggest problem with Barbie is the team that's working on it and the ineffectual, uninspiring leader who is running it.
