Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

BRCM working model

Most people don't understand the way Broadcom operates currently, after target aqusitions :

stage 1: unload business units that are under the operating margin target and are un-salvageable, too pie-in-the-sky, with little ROU prospect

stage 2: SGNA optimization : IT, HR, Admin, Travel, Security, Real Estate Mgmt non-critical jobs, get slashed to the bone.

stage 3: BU deliniation and per-BU targets. Hock doesn't lay you off. You BU manager lays you off, if you are worthless to the BU. Hock doesn't give a rat's a--. If your BU can keep you and get rid of Friday donuts, maybe they'll do that. Also forget cross-BU IP sharing. You want IP from another BU? You have to buy it.No free for all. This inspires a spirit of competition and avoids wasteful spending.

If you're not relevant to the overall picture, you're out, sooner or later.

You're welcome.

If Broadcom makes a second offer, I am out, because I am sure the next offer will get accepted, and I have heard enough (not from here, I have my own sources) to know that being bought by Broadcom is like getting a one-way ticket to hell.

I have enough options to be able to get out quickly, and I will do so before there is a steady flood of layed off Q engineers spoiling the job market.

Yes, that is exactly what happened in my former company when we were bought by Broadcom.

The only major issue for you as an employee here is: How is it determined that you are worthless? I had great performance reviews year after year (and now had a great performance review at Q, so I can‘t be all that bad), but I was still fired, because my manager‘s manager had a budget reduction target, and he wasn‘t good at negotiating for our group, so ultimately, he ended up picking the highest earners for the layoff, regardless of our value and productivity.

The problem is that Broadcom doesn‘t restructure acquisitions in a meaningful way. They just give a budget target, and that‘s it, and that creates a huge panic, and everyone frantically scrambles to save whatever they can save.

So yes, I wish it were all about how relevant you are, but realistically speaking, the whole thing can turn into a complete lottery. Don‘t feel safe just because your manager keeps telling you how good you are.

IP is not subjected to limiting sharing provisions, that entire portfolio belongs to the company, anyone can USE it. You can use stuff other parts of the company developed, but don't expect support or dedicated resources. Your BU wants dedicated support, get ready to pay up (to the original BU).

Your goal is to be above the line of doom. Above operating margin target, all's good. Below target, start looking.
