I've been thinking of leaving GE for a while now, but the idea of waiting it out for severance is too enticing, at least for now. However, it occurred to me that leaving on my own versus being laid off can be read differently by potential future employers.
I was wondering if anybody knows if being laid off is considered a negative mark on a resume, or is it treated as something that was out of the candidate's control and it does not reflect on his/her capabilities?
I read that if you have a company that is going down as bad as GE says they are then it’s not good. I would rather be let go than have GE a once career job on my resume just shows that it’s a measly cut throat job like any other company out there. Good luck there is a better life after GE.

It has no ill effect, and if anything makes interviewing easier. To echo what others have said, the hiring company is typically sympathetic and I've had no problem landing a job. Good luck! It's not all doom and gloom like this forum makes it seem.
I think it is easier to get a new job if you just leave the fact that you worked at GE Schenectady off your resume.
Yes, it won’t have any impact. Unilever laid off several hundred people in the US, and sent the jobs to Bangalore. In interviews, my experience is that the hiring company is sympathetic and sometimes a bit horrified at what happened. I agree with the other poster, good companies are looking at the results you delivered.
Getting laid off has no impact on your resume. Everyone knows GE is laying off massive amounts of people. I just interviewed and landed a huge job after getting laid off and people were more sympathetic than concerned about it if I brought it up. I have spoken to several former GEers who were also laid off and they experienced the same thing...no impact. Your career results are way more important than things you cannot control, like job elimination.
