I am aware of an MG5 that planned on retiring this year and then the RIF happened. She happily took the nearly 2 years payment to retire at nearly at the same time as she was planning.

If they were already planning on retiring this year, I don't see how it could really impact them negatively. If they end up in a buy-out group, it would be a positive impact. Otherwise, they've already got one foot out the door anyway.

I don't know if someone can be bought out after they've already given their retirement notice, so perhaps they'd want to hang on to see if there will be an offer, or at least check the HR policy on that.
