Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What makes you stick with Qualcomm?

Why are you still here? Why did you come here in the first place? Look at the situation right now, uncertainity, unhappines, turmoil, greed, infighting, backstabbing. A reasonable and a logical move would be to jet immediately. Yet, almost everyone decides to stick around.

What makes you stick around?

1cip - not asking someone to "just leave". Quite the contrary. I am asking if you have those other issues (visa) even the package can't help you, in fact would be worse than having a job that you don't like. Agree it sounds cruel but only way I would say it is to stay till you get a green card and then leave.

This is the dark side of the H1b system that many people don't know about.

As always good and bad exists. Bad out number good here. resting and vesting, being in a comfort zone primarily is what make people stick.

Winners in politics feel good or their political accomplishment not the work and that keeps them going, losers in politics feel the pain and are the cribbers- but in comfort zone from job perspective, neutral ones are hanging in there.

I have been with qcom for over 5 years in Boulder... I like the overall culture, my team is very good (including my manager) and I enjoy my work.

Uncertainty and the constant stream of negative news s---s. Linkedin messages from recruiters are too tempting, but the local team and projects are good that I have been able to constantly say no. If broadcom takes over then I will likely reply yes to those recruiters... Until then I plan to stick around at for forseable future

1dat - no one is trivializing the situation. I am simply stating the facts for many folks suffering and stuck in the situation. It's easy for someone to say "just leave" when they don't have to deal with visa, single income family, multiple kids, older parents to take care off. Before someone ask those questions, talk with people at work then you will have more appreciation about how bad the situation is on peoples stress level. Otherwise why would HR post those "reduce stress one step a time" sign all over campus ? Has anyone seen those signs on Google campus?

"1oss"! Am at a loss to understand you.

If you are so miserable why are you staying?

You are just waiting for big problems to show up so you get the notifice??? I understand not everyone who stays is happy with their situation and they just stay because after all you need to take care of the family/yourself. But please don't trivialize the package situation, you will repent later and think having a job was a much better "problem" to deal with!

Waiting for the exit package to compensate all the years of mental suffer due to racism, nepotism, bullying! For the guy said he is learning a lot - good for you. You seem a smart guy, get out while you can. Don't stay more than Sr. Eng otherwise you will see the dark side. Google will be more suited for you. Good luck. Alios!

Well said FLT. Of course you have to be at least happy with your immediate team and immediate management for that, otherwise you can't really love what you're doing. In the latter case it will feel like totally worthless work and you are only staying for the gravy! And with so many politically savvy folks it's hard to say it's the former case more often than not!

It would take companies like qcom to disrupt and accelerate the technology evolution. Every business has its own problems. I love what I do here. Receiving appriciation for our products and knowing someone somewhere loving what we have created which I m a part of, is what that gives me my daily dose of inspiration to stick with qcom.

San Diego....if you have a home and kids in middle school and beyond, moving is the last thing on your mind.

For those who did move within SD, how were you able to change from the Q to other fields (medical devices etc) easily - me wonders. Drop some tips if you can.

I like people here and I still learn a lot every day. I joined 2 years ago, so for me, this is a perfect learning environment (joined straight from school) - I know a ton of old timers are unhappy, but for me, things are good so far and if I get cut, so be it.
