Bon-Ton won't be the last chain to file for bankruptcy this year. It looks like Sears could join them in Chapter 11 in the near future

Employee morale in my store is now the worst I've seen anywhere, and I've been through layoffs before. Call-offs are rampant, people are constantly late or trying to get out early, whispered conversations everywhere. Store management is trying to keep on a brave face, but they are worried because they are being kept in the dark, too. They push for "business as usual," but it is hard to do that when customers walk in and ask, "when are you closing?" Not if, but when. Multiple times every day.

Meanwhile, it is all we can do to keep our customers happy and make the store somewhat presentable with the pitiful payroll and assortment of goods we get. How can associates sell credit cards (which is all senior management cares about) when customers are convinced we are going bankrupt? We aren't even paid a decent wage: most of us could work at a grocery or convenience store for a better wage and more reliable hours.

My store's condition is embarrassing: cracked floor tiles, 20-year-old stains in the carpet, bathrooms in desperate need of remodeling... you name it, we got it. But the execs don't care, as long as they get their bonuses, right?

There isn't anyone in their right mind who would buy this company. I'm just holding out for a layoff in hopes of severance (which I've earned after nearly a decade with the company, but may not materialize if bankruptcy is happening), and then unemployment. I need some time to reset and recharge after the last couple years. But if my store isn't closing, then I gotta get out. This place is killing me.

Like that’s a surprise!

Have you seen a Younker’s, Herberger’s, or Elder- Beerman lately?

Those used to be really nice hometown stores with good brands and better goods if you wanted to treat yourself.

Now they are all budget moderate crap shoveling stores that are run down and garbage pits. Those are not the special department stores they used to be.

Those ego maniacs at Carson Pirie Scott, which were destroying their own company, wrecked all of those stores.

I hope someone buys them out and fires all those morons.
