@RkXLyzG-3uku Thank you very informative and you explained the very strong advantages.

@RkXLyzG-3cbg But even so, the poster said " one is able to meet with HR and the Union Rep to get whatever questions answered," I suspect if we met with HR they would be naturally on the side of the company, where as the union rep is standing behind the worker.

Kaiser in California is a very very strong healthcare system and union and the nurses, doctors, staff are very protected in their jobs

You still have access to what is in your personnel file. Ask for it in writing and they will supply you with it.

I have worked/been a part of a Union in the past and I will say this... Although lay-offs still happen, the employer is at least held accountable in terms of how those that go is determined (outlined in a contract) and seniority is at the top of the list! HUGE factor! There is no willy nilly eenie meenie miny moe, mysterious try and figure it out game playing. Furthermore one is able to meet with HR and the Union Rep to get whatever questions answered, no secret policy, etc. Lastly and maybe most importantly, the laid off employee has access to all documents in their personnel file pertaining to employment performance and the lay-off with the opportunity to file a Grievance if the union contract was not followed. I have personally known people to get over a year’s salary in one lump sum after filing a grievance (unfortunately this is how long the process takes) and get their job back!

When I worked in a hospital it was really difficult getting fellow RNs to get on the union track. We had union meetings and speakers and the votes would be very close but never passed. I think with a huge company like H ( well maybe not as huge anymore) the logistics and different state laws could make it harder to unify. I believe in unions ( look at how much strength California Nurses Asso has. They do amazing work!) but sadly unions have gotten bad raps. So we slide backwards towards repeating Triangle Shirtwaist Fire ( which is what triggered union power back in the day )

Humana is now the Titanic--- do you really REALLY want job security on the Titanic?

Even union members are subject to RIF. Many Humana employees are backed by union based on where they live. The 60 day notice is the requirement when union backed employees are subjected to RIF. So, unfortuneatley, joining a union wouldn’t make a difference when there’s a need for RIF.
