Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

Hiring after layoffs?

1/23, hired 46 more, why couldn't any of these positions been offered to those let go last week?

Is this true? How can Windstream justify this?

I guess it was truly about getting rid of people who have earned their higher pays. Experience and knowledge are nowadays a liability at Windstream.

Unionize?

I agree, had all of WIN been union this would be playing out differently now. But it's too late. People today are scared. They want to fly under the radar, they will tell you they only have a few more years to retirement, the young employees will say they have a family to support, they don't want to rock the boat. I can't blame them, if someone started taking union around me I would be hiding under my desk as well. Sad but true.

No surprise they are not doing good compared to other companies. They let go people who are very good without offering another position. Seems to me they just pick a number of people and they let them go without thinking of the consequences. What will customers think when they call in and are transferred many times and their problems are not solved, and yet those reps who solved issues and ensured customer satisfaction were laid off too? I don't know exactly who makes these decisions, but it's clear poor management. I agree with other people who post here when they say it's also related to pay increase. You can't grow in that company. What a disappointment.

Didn't Tony announce another new VP in his blog about the layoffs on Jan 18th? Did he hire from the outside or just promote one of his GOBs?

unionize folks! It isn't too late. At least Give the management a real challenge to deal with instead of spending their day hunting for that next new VP. At least future packages would be better!

"Windstream is just getting rid of all the deadweight. Thank God they closed Richmond. Now is they'd get rid of Greenville this company would get back on track."

That is exactly a large part of the problem, the issue is not only with poor leadership at the executive level. How exactly is Greenville driving this company off track? What do you see that Charlotte or ROC is doing better that would miraculously fix the problem? I'm a long time employee and have done nothing but make myself available to help the other centers during mergers and acquisitions. At the same time, I saw resistance from my co-workers sitting next to me as well as the newly merged work center. I'm sorry, but your attitude s---s and has/is directly impacting the ability of the different work centers to share the load and work efficiently.

You, my friend, are an idiot.

Dead weight... NOT. If that was the case many middle and upper managers would be gone! Windstream has released much talent and knowledge...this company is spiraling out of control and soon will be bankrupt!

IF Windstream is hiring while laying off they are in violation of Federal mandated law. This has nothing to do with the union or being unionized or not. If anyone has evidence that Windstream is doing this l encourage them to call the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) There are multiple offices in every state. They will come into Windstream and pull records, they will conduct a full investigation...fine Windstream heavily and halt hiring. Also l am hearing of age and race discrimination....this is harder to prove but also violation of Federal Law...Call EEOC....call people..tell what you know!!....please.

It’s a new era. The want kids, not skilled technicians. Skilled technicians make things hard for management. Stupid young people that don’t rock the boat.....that’s the new windstream

Get out of WS and stay out. There are other opportunities out there. I got the boot last week last day the 1st. I have already had 3 interviews and 2 are about to extend me offers. 1 of which is a 25% increase of my WS salary and the other is a whopping 75% increase. Dont stay at WS just because youre comfortable there, you will find better I assure you.

Ok, here are the totals for 1/22 to 1/26. WIN hired 133, 55 were ' backfills' , 78 were for ' new positions'. These were across all states, customer service, CST, OSP, sales, sales engineer, procurement.

In my dept, one person was here only 4 months and got the boot. Another was here less than a year and got their riding papers; this was this persons second time at Windstream and this person was laid off back in 2007 also. Twice in a decade.

Yes, there are tons of job postings on the Windstream Career site. Seems counter intuitive, right? Logically you would think people, at least some of them, would be offered these positions before being let go. All I have to say to the people who get hired in these open positions is...good luck! Why on earth would anyone accept a position with a company who has a history of layoffs every six months or less?

Ya but how many customers do you lose for each inexperienced employee you hire over an experienced one. Every business knows its more cost effective to pay 1 person well and they know what theyre doing than to replace them and it take 3-4x longer to figure out something

Ummmm...If you look at indeed.com or any hiring website...they are hiring people for 15.00/hr. beats having to pay someone who actually know something for 23.00/hr. Cut enough and re-hire and they bave saved a sh*t ton im money!

Most likely sales folks..that will ride their overpaid salary for the rest of the year while they sit back and sell nothing.

Windstream has gotten its poor reputation from this very practice. They dont want you to be good. They want subpar employees for some reason and it shows more and more.
