Thread regarding Riverbed Technology Inc. layoffs

Watch your back

If you are contemplating a position at Riverbed my advice would be to keep on walking. I’ve been with the company for a little over 2 years and am currently looking elsewhere. My department has coworkers that seem to be undermining each other as much as possible making it seem more like a competition than a job.

Don’t get me wrong, some of my colleagues are nice, but plenty want to ride the coattails of others because they don’t seem to understand what their responsibilities entail but they still want to get ahead at any cost.

I’ve had enough of this, and I know I’m not the only one. This is a serious issue management should look into before they lose their best people.

There’s a lot of rah rah flag waving going on internally. Apparently the Support folks had to endure a sales-ish spruiking of “the future is bright, it really is” in their last global all-hands. I guess they’re the ones on the pointy end of QA failure- the TAC people I’ve reached out to are all on the lookout for opportunities to jump ship.

There’s been a few cases of “choking on the dog food” with global network outages. The IT reaponse emails don’t state the reasons but word is that we’re all unofficially helping the QA team.

This is a weird place to work. People are leaving right and left. I don't see any plan. QA is almost non-existent and the problems are being found by customers instead. Who thought this was a good idea? Oh yeah, the Eng VP who quit last year. The latest is some interview I saw with JK where he said "we are the next Cisco". That's like a manufacturing city calling themselves the next Detroit. It's extremely disheartening.

Was a good place once. I worked there from early 2009 for about 6 years. Was great first couple of years. Then Steve McCane, the CTO and founder member left after Opnet acquisition at twice the price. And everyone else who was any good left. I had three manager changes. The last one was exactly what OP has described. I was first hand witness to him undermining someone who reported to him officially to the Director , covering up his own fault. Who would trust such a manager? He lied even about his commitments on yearly reviews. I brought in HR and then left the swamp for a much better, more respectful environment. Well, heard last year, during the annual headcount cull, he got slaughtered. Riverbed has become a place where professionals go to die. If you are any good , then stay away. If you need A job then may consider taking it but keep looking!
