IBM Reports Higher Revenue, Profit Down

But several analysts expect the mainframe cycle to tail off by the end of the year, creating a challenge for > IBM to maintain its momentum, especially since hardware sales tend to also have a beneficial effect on

revenue in other divisions. Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Bernstein Research, estimates that hardware

drives sales of related support services, software, storage and financing that historically have made up

roughly 40% of IBM’s operating profit.

IBM will need to turn around declining revenue in its services businesses to make up the difference,

some analysts said. Those businesses grew around 4.5% in the quarter, reversing their declining

trajectory in recent quarters. Getting those divisions growing consistently is essential to IBM’s long-term

health, according to some analysts.

IBM better have good health insurance. . .

Cloud support engineers laid off last fall. Global cloud environments supported by offshore resources. Not surprised at all by latest outage. Those poor folks dont know what they are doing.

Surprised there arent more prolonged outages.

From a post on Seeking Alpha's IBM page:

Poor quality earnings based on a huge one-time tax rate and currency movement, z mainframe refresh cycle (which is every so many years and now over pretty much), DECLINING sales in strategic imperatives (cloud, ai, etc), declining storage sales, MISS on FY18 guidance, and the FCF can't sustain the dividend and buybacks going forward..

There was a LOT of bad news from this manufactured "beat". Open your eyes and don't just look at the top line. This dinosaur is stuck in the tar pits of declining legacy corporations. Plus there was a major world-wide outage in IBM's public cloud platform yesterday. Whoops.

Prayers for IBMers. When profit is down, the execs see only one way to fix that. Lay off those "highly paid" N. American based workers.
