Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Smaller, not stronger

Those who don't learn from history, etc, etc. Qualcomm has again managed a layoff so that they got smaller not stronger. The cuts were essentially random because they reflected organizational and political structure rather than future business need. Great, productive engineers were let go. Mediocre engineers stayed.

How it should be done...

  1. Coding test for all engineers, including VPs. Fail and you're out.

  2. Three interviews for each engineer by people they don't know. Stack rank and cut the lowest n%.

  3. Use the interview results to assign engineers to priority projects. Everything else is hard stopped.

I would agree that the layoffs were pseudo-random.

In my group, two do-nothing engineers were let go, but so was one of the most productive. Those of us left behind are worried. We're worried about the increased work-load and we're worried about any future layoffs.

I'm boycotting the all-hands meeting. Not in a mood to have all that smoke blown up my a**.

All the goons at and over Principal Engr has to go. It is too top heavy.

That’s not the Qualcomm way.

True.

These cuts are random!

I have seen the best people go and question myself in disbelief of why some who did not have the same abilities remained.

Sad right?

What can we conclude from this?

  1. There is X amount of money we save and all it has to be done is to fire this amount of people.

  2. Favoritism. I don't think I need to explain the second. You all know how it goes.
