Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

server team in raleigh...

So what is the deal with the server team in Raleigh. For one, they were not affected by the layoffs that happened in between while we SD folks got a lot of axe as usual, and now I am hearing some rumors about a buyout! Is that how QCOM wants to pay the 2bn$ to NXP for their failed acquisition. The executive decisions always amuse me. I always thought it was a promising venture for diversifying Qualcomm's portfolio. Now we are again relying on the mobile and 5g for getting us out of the ditch.

There were a few very ( some of the biggest companies in US) large customers with very large orders on the books.

It would have been better for QDT if Broadcom had succeeded. QDT would have at least had jobs through 2019 - and who knows how that would have played out - especially if the big customers - who are literally salivating to get out from under Intel hegemony ramped up their procurement. The 2400 spanked even Intels highest tier chips on TCO and performance per dollar.

Also the stock would be 50% higher than it is now.

Even if QDT only got 5% of the market, it would have been a printing press for revenue.

It’s funny - SM and management are presenting as if they fended off Broadcom takeover. It was Trump and his executive order bat that did that.

The server chip in production and the next one to tape out were and are remarkable achievements.

SM and co have wrecked QCs future so they can keep their McMansions on the heads of truly brilliant people. You should’ve seen all the lobbying they did by email and on the company’s internal website to vote the right color proxy card before Trumps order. I wish I could vote - it certainly wouldn’t have been for SM. Now it makes sense why Paul got kicked out.

I think I will go back to working for small private companies. At least they usually care about what they are doing instead of manipulating stock prices, and, at least in my experience, truly care about their employees and will avoid wrecking their lives if at all possible.

Who knows what will happen with the server team. Time will tell. But I want to say this: I have worked with them and they are freaking awesome! Very competent, organized and professional. They don't do BS meetings. They don't waste time with useless politics. I have not met a single "status collector" in that team. The Q is full of useless status collectors who, of course, where not affected by this layoff.

Yeah, what a brilliant (eyeroll) plan to buyback 30 billion $ of shares: that's where the growth will come from, instead of doubling down in new markets/segments. lol

PJ will buy it, RTP guys will enjoy at least two more years of undisturbed genuine engineering work...I admit it, I am envious

Snapdragon PC isn’t much cost to Qualcomm to do, not many people or money goes toward it

Why didn't SM shut down CA's snapdragon pc business instead of server . Server might have a shot, but the pc thing will generate zero revenue guaranteed.

QCOM now considering keeping it because of so much interest, they feel like they may have undervalued it and can save the money elsewhere

Surprised SM shut it down? I'm not, he is all that's wrong with Q, it's time for him to go. Amazed shareholders are not demanding it. He has one excuse after another yet he keeps pretending all will be fine, well it's not and won't be until he leaves.

should have let Hock Tan killed the server group, at least people got $82 a share.

QC server chip is not bad, it won't beat intel but it definitely has its own market segment to survive. It was unbelievable that SM simply announced shutting it down when the product is already commercially available.

You cheerleaders don't get it, Intel is in the drivers seat with 99.3% of the server market and 20% growth in server sales in the last year. They are not slowing down.

Q has a product that on paper is cheaper, but a lot of cheaper server alternatives have failed, and there are even cheaper still choices in ARM and x64.

Look at history. AMD's Opteron had growth until Intel built Nehalem specifically to sink AMD, and it did.

Now AMD is back with EPYC, which is the easy low cost choice to make. Most will stay with Intel, because processor cost is only a fraction of total cost.

But lets say Q is successful, and builds the ARM infrastructure needed for ARM acceptance (it doesn't fully exist today) and makes some significant market share even against other ARM vendors like Cavium.

Then you will see Intel launch a competitive chip and leverage its market relationships to push Qualcomm out.

Just go to Qualcomm's public website and browse for server technical application notes and you will discover how efficient it is compared to Intel for performance vs power. It would be a huge loss to the market to lose such a winner. It's just going to cement Intel monopoly to the detriment of consumers and don't forget the planet. Qualcomm server chips are so damn power efficient, they are good for the planet too.

Yeah I am waiting for Intel to make arm server! Bring it on. It will only help other arm server vendors by fully developing the ecosystem, Q's server venture including if it is around which I dearly hope it would be.

QC Server is a better, cheaper part than Intel's. Saving buyers money hand over fist. That was proven months ago at the release. If they shut it down, it's asinine.

And what is the BS about Intel making an ARM server processor? You're just talking out your neck. If you corner the market why would to switch platforms and pay ARM royalties?

There are no buyers to server chips, they will shut it down. This would affect some employees in bay area as well.

So the market is beholden to Intel with no competition and high power designs. The big cloud guys understand this and were willing to work with Q but always question Q's commitment and for good reason. Q screwed them

SM can't see beyond his nose. Has never created value for Q, just riding momentum created by others.

Designs are competitive. The failure is on the part of Senior execs. Q is doomed with no diversification.
