Why do you think that you have some sort of "right" to lifetime employment?
Regarding the self interest mentioned in the first response: very true, that includes continuously upgrading your skill set and education, so that you can provide value to a future employer if you lose your current job.
Too many union workers in Schenectady have been on cruise control for years, assuming they would never have to look for another job. GE offers excellent tuition reimbursement and the machinist training program was available for years. How many union members bothered to take advantage of either one?
Barely graduating high school and performing what can be considered semi-skilled labor isn't going to land you a $25+ per hour job outside of GE. A few people may get lucky and land one of the few union manufacturing jobs in the area with similar wages. The rest will be in for a painful reality check.
