Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why are we still hiring?

With so many small layoffs and talks of huge cuts, can somebody please explain to me why are there so many job postings for Cisco?

This is a serious question. Why are those jobs not offered to people being ousted in layoffs? Or why are they even available if we are already cutting left and right?

Local laws might require a job be posted publically, but the corporate goons write the job descriptions to suit only cheap offshore contractors

There are no leaders in Cisco, only messengers, who forward email on behalf of board. They will put fancy names like Director, VP, etc, but cannot have any say. Pesudo organization just to make their money tax free.

We keep rehiring because we can pay those newbies less $$ and keep our costs down. Same reason we rely on contractors -- never have to give them a raise. What happens when Wall St. runs the economy.

the current mode is worse, because it becomes common for engineers, who love to optimize their efforts, to decide that it's good to recommend the company use the newest technology so the engineers get to learn it, regardless of the relevance to the actual problem. So every 2-3 years, the product get re-written to pad engineer resumes

Way back in the day I worked for Hewlett-Packard when Bill and Dave still ran the company. We had an excess of hardware engineers. Instead of laying them off, HP retrained them to be coders. Started something I think they called "Unixversity"

Things don't work like that anymore. If you do your job and your skills get out of date then you are disposed of. Not sure which is the best approach. On the one hand it allows a company to be nimble and forces people to constantly update their skills. On the other hand, a person is less likely to devote themselves entirely to a company if they know they are a disposable commodity. It is also hard to do your job as well if you are always looking over your back and spending as much time as possible working on skills that are not relevant to your current job.

Good God this post and the answers scares me. What kind of Muppets does Cisco employ. Yes if someone is suitable for a vacancy they can apply but if they haven't got the skill set they won't get it.

It's not rocket science is it I would suggest you spend more time polishing your resumes and less on this site.

Many of those posts are part of the green card process for H1Bs.

They post jobs in the USA, but do not hire US citizens. They do this so company execs can moan and lobby to Congress to raise the H1B visa caps.

Many job listings are not associated with a hiring manager or funding. Cisco enjoys collecting resumes.

New people will take another 10 years to learn and work on pre-Y2K technologies. Cisco is like a Car sales & service shop where they only want maintenance and sales people.

Get rid of the expensive people, hire back the cheaper newbies. Simple.
