@kkf - target audience for these systems is hyperscalers, FAANG & their ilk. third-party ISVs aren't as relevant.

@kkf, you're right you need a fully formed ecosystem of most commonly used software and tools apart from the hardware to be viable. These things take time and ARM and their partners have been spending a lot of resources on that. But eventually it will happen because nobody wants a monopoly. It's time to shake off Intel's market dominance in CPU space. They are a freakin monopoly. People are just stuck but once there's an opening the dam will burst open. Intel realizes that. Time to stop the bully!

No they aren’t. If they were SPARC wouldn’t have been axed. In addition, power would have more traction. Finally. AMD would actually gain market share.

The issue with arm server is there’s no real commercial software for it. Chicken and egg deal. You need software and hardware to have an ecosystem.

Only special purpose workloads will ever hit the arm server market. I use the term market loosely.

Whoever said that Server chips are low margin, know nothing. Intel has an 85% GM in Server chips and their customers are highly motivated for an alternative.

Not quite. Besides the arm brain you need some good infrastructure and periphery. This is still an area to compete. Todays socs are much more then just the cpu.

Just pray that arm isn't able to come up with its own lower power cores. If they did then all bets are off.

Q has added value in the product brought to the table being more efficient in MIPS/Watt or something like that. Heard of fang building their own power generator plants? Power efficiency in their servers can turn into big buck savings for then. Hence q is in this market.

There’s a reason so many arm server companies and programs were canceled in the past year or two. Wualcomm is just figuring that out now....

Agree with last poster. Server market is already mature and Qualcomm needs to deliver same performance and functionality at low power and cost to be able to get some market share. In mobile space Qualcomm broke new ground simultaneously with probably Apple.

Margins in server SoCs may be quite large contrary to what was being said.

Big customers like Google Microsoft Amazon would be happy to see Qualcomm supplying the server chips.

They way diverse suppliers

It's a low margin business which is already quite matured and Qualcomm does not bring anything revolutionary other than small incremental improvement if any

Hello "gyf",

Maybe there's some truth to what you say. But remember comparison to mediaflo isn't right in true sense. Mediaflo was a non existent product category and was too late and iPhone killed it. ARM server chips are going to be fulfilling an existing market by stealing share from the Big I. So the jury is still out on that. Only thing I can see killing it is if AMD comes out with a much better (compared to intel) server chip as they are IA based.

Like everything around here, server is 'in a leadership position' and 'driving new market opportunities' and 'enhancing shareholder value'.

Like Mediaflo, it will be endlessly promoted right up until the late Friday afternoon, preferable before a long holiday weekend, when it will be silently dropped...............teams will be 'refocused' and 're-aligned', maybe some 'pivoting' and further 'strategic insights'.

Friday 4th May or Friday 25th May both good days to drop bad news or struggling products. 4:50pm Pacific good timing for the actual press release, if any.
