@nkc - thanks for putting it so succinctly and for being so understanding of this plight that many of us older folks face. Have been finding that out the hard way and realizing that for a former EE who accidentally morphed into a "sw" engineer along the way by moving internally, these interviews are a total shock. It makes you question yourself and your worth. While you're working you never pay attention to the kinds of problems you need to solve in interviews. And sometimes even the simplest of things can trip you when you're being interviewed by a much younger person. I talked to many folks who are also deficient in coding on a white board. Like you said mastering the job search and interviews is something everyone should focus on as much as doing your current job!
He mainly pointed out how he was on a visa and that's what was causing him issues.
It's hard preparing for interviews when you're swamped here at work. It's always a balancing act where you've got to judge how much is good enough and then use the rest of the time for interview preparation. And no...just being yourself is a terrible idea. Companies these days have a gruelling interview process where you could be thrown complex CS algorithm questions to having to explain an LTE procedure you might never have worked on. And all this for a position similar to the one im in right now. So you got to prepare. For me this is the real stress. And I'm on a Visa (please don't be the nth person asking me to go back to my country) so my time is very limited. I'm 30 so I can imagine how hard it can be for 40 plus folks. My real career from now on is mastering the job search process, the role I happen to work on is just gonna be a part time gig.
