Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Brutal honesty at QCA all hands

They considered closing down San Jose and moving everything off shore...Honest but demotivating speech..

Don't - it's what they want.

I find the comments wishing for Octane hilarious. You were falling for SM's sweet talk before this. Of course I'll respect you in the morning! Well, it's morning now. How do you feel?

What do you think happened to NJ ? I’m

NJ based and lucky to still have a job but probably not for long. The VPs there know this also. They’re just sticking around for a massive severance. With a layoff of this magnitude, 40% or so, it’s difficult to recover. Yes we’re hurtin’.

1apr you nailed it. The Systems team is the only one whixh does not have a parallel in India, China..Once they have that they can develop arxhitecture/algorithms and SJ site will cease to exist in a year.

The VPs and GMs here would be then managing these offshore teams.

The key idea is to do the layoffs over a year or so.. This is to ramp up overseas teams in architecture aspects which they weren’t doing so far... SJ team is use and throw ..RP wanted to not share this openly ..

But SG is a blabber mouth.. He even started off saying the reason org change was happening was because RP was complaining...

San Jose RTL team will be let go by September. SG didn't want to falsely say no more layoff.

I think people are just angry and frustrated that their jobs are being sent away...

Poor SG is just another corporate stooge who is doing what is "best" for the shareholders.

I agree QCA employees should thank him that he gave them advance notice about a future layoff, and hinted that they should start moving sooner than later.

As we all know the Top is very static and bottom engineers are always expendable. The logic that fire a exec to save 10 engi eers seldom worka out..

I just watched a video replay of this meeting and actually had the opposite reaction to all the comments posted here. I think they handled the situation honestly and professionally.

It’s curious how so much vitriol is being directed toward SG and not RP, whereas SG was being forthright about the state of things and not sugar-coating or BS-ing regarding the thinking behind the decisions and the general outlook. We should be thankful for his candor since it provides important cues as to what the rank and file can expect down the road.

mhu: rightly said, they knew they could mess with fruit as their jobs would be safe either way..which we are seeing rigt now.

Name one exe who was let go...

The Q has become a feudal enterprise, with the Cs being the lords and others their vassals..

I hope the board get a chance to remap 5he whole C suite, each and every one should be tossed out ASAP.

Shamelessness in this leadership amazes me..

These guys do really have a "thick" skin. But SG/SM/GD take it at another level..

How can you sleep in your Bil$ houses knowing that every step you take is a disaster urooting peoples lives.

How I wish Octane would have taken over. Are you kidding me ? He was offering $82 per share. We would have got our RSUs vested even if we were let go. Dream on about the stock reaching $82 now. Ain’t happening. Period !!!!!

I think the reality is we messed up with big fish like Apple. You simply don’t pick fights with the likes of Apple and expect to survive long. They really do have the upper hand like it or not. Our management’s egos were at play instead of common sense and being realistic. QTL’s 30 yr old licensing model continues to hurt us however we refuse to get rid of it or even refuse to acknowledge that this is the root of all our problems. When we become arrogant and pig headed like this, then we have to face what follows.

Good luck to us. Management doesn’t care since their remunerations are ‘ugeee. Ours aren’t.

RP and SG would get expat positions at QIPL and continue to milk the company regardless. What a sorry state of affairs.

You have to admit, on a headcount basis, engineering in the bay area can be done cheaper somewhere else.

The problem with Qualcomm: do they care about 3G or WiFi anymore? Did they ever care about and respect the hard work that went into bringing WiFi into what it is today?

They needed your patents to stay relevant in 4G. But, what mountains are left to climb for Wifi that needs San Jose?

I was one of the idiots who believed the Q mgmt propaganda when octane was trying his luck,

first to go would have been RP n SG. Miss you Octane, you could have cleaned up much better this WiFi mess.

The new reorg in QCA is a joke..Incompetence is blatant with SG or should I call him The Terminator!!

@T8OTOrh-cww

There are said some ages discrimination in High Tech in Bay Area. If you are 40+, it is hard to get a job in especially in FB, Google, Apple...

Is it true?

I think I don’t want my son to become an engineer in the future......

So sad to see this happening in United States.

My 2 cents they want to reuse as much HW module from M for WiFi hw specially. SG thinks high of QIsrael so might be moving work there and make QIndia work with them for the HW development.

SG and RP are busy managing upward for their survival. RK, BK and VK are resting and vesting. MS, DL and DT are clueless. SP and PS are AWOL. IG and GS are sabotaging each other. Rest are running around like headless chickens. Sad state of QCA!

SG is out of this world, generally after a layoff, executives give a pep talk to calm down the rest, but this guy made sure that people felt less at ease and more threatened.

Maybe playing long game, where they want ppl to leave on their own and not pay severence.

When slido qsn abt loyality came RP more or less said yeh we dont expect ..so feel free to GTFO.

rng: lol !!!!!! Voldemort 😂😂 Classic !

True though. The dude appeared cold blooded and ruthless. It appears RP and SG have given up and know very well where all this is heading. QIPL ! Good for QIPL I guess.

SJ and NJ (whatever is left of it) better be very wary.

SG reminds me of Voldemort...

I saw his linkedin profile, he is from CSR, I cant believe he is a C- type. Totally dead inside.

The next update on his resume will be "burned down a succesful wifi buisness and moved jobs to asia"

The guys attitude is stinks, I remember him clearly saying " I csnt promise there will be no more cuts"

I believe they kept a few in SJ to finish the current projects and then will start next cuts.

All wise have left..the cmpny. Future for SJ site is to keep paying these GMs n SVPs for moving amercn jobs to asia.

At least RP & SG spent a considerable amount of time on Slido questions. CA, hardly spent any time on those and our CEO (who I still wonder why is he still around) doesn’t even take any questions. Just one way communication. Annoys the h**k out of people.

I also agree with several posters below that the writing is on the wall. It’s a matter of time before everything moves offshore.

Is QC in sync with the president’s initiative of keeping jobs at home ??????

Leadership is absent in QCA. There is no vision. Execution is abysmal. No one at VP and SVP level has any clue of what’s going on. This is a sinking ship. Good people have left or are leaving. No recovery possible without complete change of leadership!

Yes I agree. The SVP was cold as ice.

He couldnt care less about the team he inherited.

Sad sad days.

They should geoshift the C level titles also.

In every meeting, the engr SVP , goes back in time reminiscing the days when he was successful in building toys and how he is still learning the abc's of wifi.. He is so detached from the passion & emotions of this place/people... How did he get to be the SVP ?

Yes, the hint that more layoffs will happen was disturbing. So the idea is to make the engineers work their a-- off till they kick you to the curb.

The hint was that you should be thankful we did not shut this sh-- down. Now go work till we decide when to geoshift again.

My advice to all would be to move out asap. The SJ unit is going to die a slow death.
