Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

I told you so....

I told many of you last November that a huge layoff was coming....I told you to prepare for the worst and hope for the best...

My advice to many was:

1) Update CV/Resume and social media presence

2) Apply to 10-20 job openings carefully completing the profiles at each company as recruiters often search resume databases in advance of future or secret job openings

3) Acquire at least one professional certification (if you don't already have one)

4) Create an emergency fund of 6 months of total expenses

5) Payoff as much debt as possible (credit card, car, student loan).....the house if possible

6) Be open to leaving San Diego....there are many interesting places to work/live in the US....you never know an opportunity elsewhere may lead to an even better opportunity later in San Diego

7) Once laid off - file for unemployment (if you don't have a new job already) and then create a weekly schedule of job hunting, exercise, fun activities and volunteer activities. Keeping structure will keep from getting depressed and reminder that you have value and there is a purpose for your life (although it may seem confusing)

8) It is important to limit communications with those not laid-off as this may fuel resentment and disdain....in other words.....if you feel you can't control your anger or temper....STAY AWAY....until the dust settles....Qualcomm is a mess and consider yourself lucky to be laid off in a fantastic economy....The economy can change quickly and in six months....who knows there could be a recession and those in the next round of layoff (and there will be an additional ~2,000 cuts) could be stuck in a horrible job market.

9) Last but not least. Smile. You are a child of the universe and have a right to be here. We may not understand but the universe is unfolding as it should. Be happy.

Be well! I love all of you...even those I don't like.

Nice post (and replies)

I too planned in a similar manner. I took the package and am now kicking back for the summer. My one concern is Qualcomm staying solvent long enough to payout the package next month.

Is there a possibility Qualcomm will default on the severance commitments?

Great post! I prepared for the layoff in a similar manner. There was a man on our team that kept saying plan for the worst and hope for the best. I was skeptical but did take his advice. I am so glad I did because I was laid off. I can't remember his name but THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

I agree with OP. I started a similar plan last year when Esin went to lead the Apple SoC team. I took the GTFO package and am enjoying the summer. I am in my late 40's and completely debt free. The problem with many Qualcommers is as wealth grew so did their lifesyle. I dialed it back and glad I did.

The borrower is slave to the lender as they say. Hope this helps and congrats to all who got to retire with the severance package as a nice bonus.

This:

5) Payoff as much debt as possible (credit card, car, student loan)..... the house if possible " What universe do you live in? Sure, I'll just write a check to the back for the full balance of my mortgage right now. Why didn't I think of that before?

Debt == modern slavery

How can you go to SeaWorld and Rubios?

They oppress and enslave our marine brothers and sisters.....there are dophins and fish crying in the ocean this very moment because we are eating their family members.

Shame on you

I'd miss golf and sea world and Rubio's too much. No other place to live.

haterz gonna hate. Glad OP had the foresight to plan and prepare. Planning and preparation is not valued at Qualcomm so they got whacked.
