Is it true that you have to use your severance before you can apply for unemployment?

Google search your state's unemployment law using the same question you posted here. The search results are faster and more reliable the this blog site!

No, if is is classified as Severance you and get unemployment together. but If they classifiy it as "Pay for work not Performed" them you have to wait til the time frame you were paid for not working. (i.e. 10 wk Pay for work not performed" you would have to wait til after 10 wk to get unemployment.

It varies by state. I'm on the KS side of the state line and they estimated how long my last severance package should last. Then I could claim unemployment. If you're frugal, or can be frugal you can usually make it last longer than it's intended to and start pulling unemployment in those cases.

In Missouri severance pay is not reportable , so you can draw unemployment while receiving severance pay. Check the link below.

I would double check on this. I believe the State of Missouri changed unemployment rules the summer of 2016. It changed so you could not collect unemployment benefits if you received a severance package. You will need to research this. So don't count on unemployment also because you won't get it out of the gate. Sorry.
