How to trim the remaining fat

Posted in another thread, but I think this is by far the best description of how to trim the remaining fat without actually hurting the company:

Agreed about middle management. But let's make it simple. Start w the VPs. Their salaries are anchors to our overhead. Then look really hard at the managers. Too many of them. For departments, how about trimming the fat in HR, accounting and land. Don't forget about the marketing and PR/government folks. They make a lot of money that doesn't help us drill and complete better wells. At the end of the day, we need more production to pay the bills.

Very bold approach. I like it. Too long has the oil and gas industry overpaid too much. In order to better handle the ups and downs related to commodity prices, a more cost effective work force and low overhead can provide the stability and longevity for an employee and company

Let's face it....$3 has is here to stay. Too many producers bringing on better and better wells. It's not going back higher. So companies need to learn how to budget their capex and overhead costs based on $2.50-3 gas prices. Therefore, I like paring down the salaries accordingly as well as the head count. Get out of those corporate castles, which is all about ego and not about fiscal common sense anyway.

My suggestions:

  1. Fire IT and outsource.

  2. Fire all PR and government relations people. Outsource and retain a PR/lobby company.

  3. Fire all VPs. Fire any manager that makes more than 100k.

  4. Set a ceiling for upper management salaries to not exceed 200k.

  5. Get out of the corporate building. Sell it or lease out all space. Reduce headcount by 50% at corporate. Move office to an industrial flex office space. One floor.

  6. 10% paycuts across the board.

  7. Reduce land department by 75%. Contract out field Landmen as necessary.

  8. Reduce accounting dept by 50%.

  9. Reduce HR by 50%.

A anonymous reporter called the 800 number and that may get you a call (it did for me) to see if age/race/gender/religious are consistent with WARN. I think you can get your job back. I would go to work tomorrow.
