Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Advice from an old guy

Been an outside tech for going on 38 years now and plan on being here another 2 but a little advice to you young ones is in order. Would not recommend you stay in this line of work especially copper based part of it.

Work in NW area and there was a wave of hires going on about 2 years ago, they were needed then but we've lost so much business in the copper world to where the work isnt there. You young ones don't know it because you have nothing to compare it to. Group I work in can get along with half, the one across the way could get along with 2/3 of what they have.

The last wave took some of the long time wireline support techs at HQ.

I was inside a Level3 former Time Warner telecom CO and the tech told me Level3 does not want small

bandwidth customers , they don't even try to fix their problems one dept just passes it to another dept until the customer cancels their contract . So if CenturyLink Level3 has metro rings for business customers but don't want the small business where do they go for data service ? the cable companies?

I agree. We are not competing to gain customers. They want us to retain the customers we have. Yet, that's hard to do when a simple task takes 1 to 2 hours. System is designed to fail but I'm sure that's on purpose. We only keeping 6-10meg customers that cable doesn't reach. And the next question asked are when will you get faster speeds? My answer is not anytime soon. Because no new sites or technology for the old copper network. Level 3 does not want copper or low paying residential customers. Hence the job cuts and using the money to pad the big wigs pockets. Cut bonuses and facing lawsuits should show how this company operates. Your pensions are not safe the local will be spun off soon, once the fat is trimmed down...

Here in Southeast also, a few years back we had 8-10 tasks a day, today we get 2 or 3 a day. It's costing the company 3 times the labor to get a 25m bonded line dor a mere 45 bucks a month. We spend 300 or 400 bucks and better than 50% of those customers leave in no time because 25m doesn't provide adequate bandwidth for 6 xboxes

bad news old guys level 3 looking to reduce costs and return value to stockholders which is why all the “over 50” employees, lifers with cap salaries, are being riffed first. dont run off the young guns who level 3 wants to keep to do the jobs you are doing at a third of the cost. management will find a way to ax you that even the inion cannot defend. take you packages now while you still can.

Another old guy here, agreeing great advice. There is no future here for anyone under 30. It makes me sad when the young ones talk about how great we are and how well we are doing. They habe nothing to compare to. We are a shell of our former self and it is only a matter of time till they walk away from copper and Business ie PBX and Key sytems etc.

Forgot to mention. The rumor here in the NW is that the company wanted to get rid of more people in certain positions but is being conservative and may have a round 2.

Positions in particular that are being talked about are Net and Broadband Techs and the number being thrown out is that they wanted 2x what they ended up with.

Take that with a grain of salt but I can say that my group could probably afford to lose a couple and we wouldn't even feel it work wise.
