How companies are getting rid of older employees

Thought this would be interesting to some of the folks here. It's an old article but even more important today, as all of this only intensified in the last several years. The "Suddenly stupid" part is especially on point.

If you’re 20 something, you do not have as much life and work experience. Younger works pay their dues, work hard, develop their skills, and over time their salaries will rise. I started at GE as a younger worker but as soon as I hit a certain age, GE started treating me differently, despite the fact that I still work very hard and work on developing new skills. I’m sure i’ll be let go as i’m the oldest team member. Anyone had success consulting a lawyer and having them negotiate a better severance package. To throw someone out the door when they are approaching 60 is immoral but unfortunately not illegal. Also interested if anyone has brought suit against GE for age discrimination and what the outcome was.

I hate to say this but it must be said.. it is kind of frustrating to be 20 something ,go to work and make half of what your senior coworker makes (because of a hire date) while you work hard while the senior employee watches you work becuase "hes done his time" do senior employees demand respect? Yes. But at the same time you can atleast do something when you clock in. I know it's not true for all people but it does seem a alarming percentage. So the previous comment I can agree on that part of the entitlement is demoralizing but remember. Were all in this together

GE has a way of betraying employees even those younger. Sacrifices are not appreciated. Hard work is not appreciated. Only the ability to step on others to get ahead by a few of those in the elite clubs of CAS and Leadership program snobs of the rest of the employees.

GE is not a meritocracy as it claims to be.

I could not agree more with -2its. Younger employees, just wait until you turn 50, and despite your best efforts at reinventing yourself and giving it your all and doing superb work, just watch your excellent ratings become mundanely satisfactory and see yourself passed over for promotions and leadership opportunities. It will happen to the best of you - don't be smug and think it won't.

Age discrimination is alive and well at GE. To younger workers, please realize this will happen to you as soon as you reach 50. Most of the older workers are not “entitled”, but hard working employees who feel betrayed by GE.

The best way to get rid of the old hacks is to throw them over the side. They won’t know the difference.

But maybe getting rid of the entitled "'I've been here twenty years, I just show up for a check "mentality will be a good thing after all?

Add to the list, shifting jobs to new locations which are in a new country. How do you think GE eliminated many IT positions as well as other teams in the US? It is not just manufacturing employees affected by movement of work oversees.
