If you’re 20 something, you do not have as much life and work experience. Younger workers pay their dues, work hard, develop their skills, and over time their salaries will rise. I started at GE as a younger worker but as soon as I hit a certain age, GE started treating me differently, despite the fact that I still work very hard and work on developing new skills. I’m sure i’ll be let go as i’m the oldest team member. Anyone had success consulting a lawyer and having them negotiate a better severance package. To throw someone out the door when they are approaching 60 is immoral but unfortunately not illegal. Also interested if anyone has brought suit against GE for age discrimination and what the outcome was.

There is no entitlement on this thread at all. What there is, is rampant age discrimination by GE, cutting benefits employees have worked hard for an EARNED, and a total lack of respect for the older, experienced, knowledge workers that GE apparently doesn't realize built this Company and are needed to turn it around. As an older worker, I am so tired of younger workers calling us entitled. Just wait until you turn 50. Believe me it will happen and you will see how GE treats you then.
Why do people expect jobs for a lifetime? There is so much entitlement on this message board, find another job if you have marketable skills. Don't whine about it.
GE is a horrible failing company no matter what the stock is doing today. It is gutting its knowledge and experience by laying off older employees, both union and professionals. In their place they hire non-us citizens under visas. They probably can pay them less. As if there are not plenty of kids graduating from US colleges who are citizens with engineering and software development degrees. GE is failing and has been for years. It has already lost more value than the Enron failure did. Writing is on the wall.
He is listening and decided this morning to sell off another aging business model. Those of you supporting Transportation, now is the time to dust off your resumes as synergy savings eventually lead to layoffs as the executives will need to get paid.

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Being let go before 60 is common nowadays so take the severance and look for something else to do. It may pay less but maybe you can enjoy life while you do it.
Going to Equal Opportunity Commission is a better idea. Hopefully, you have not signed the waiver and not accepted any severance money.
Consulting with a lawyer most likely a waste of time and money. It's hard to prove, especially in a right to work state.
No experience with consulting an attorney but agree with your post 100%! I’ve worked for many companies but never experienced as much ageism as I have at GE! Can’t wait to find a new job. Other companies I am speaking with value experience. Finding a new job when you’re over 50 is definitely possible and the compensation packages these companies are offering far exceed what I would ever see at GE! You have to wonder who they use to decide what salaries they pay their workers.
