Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

What’s behind the big engineering downsizing?

It looks like the company is trimming the fat on the engineering side. Have position much of the work to be done by the engineering contracting firms that they use on the side. Only need a few company engineers to oversee the projects when the contracting engineering’s firms are used. Engineering can be done off site with on site field techs being sent around. Especially since the emphasisis is not on dial tone. There have been some sloppy work and costly errors made by contracting that have caused headaches. Some of this was due to poor engineering planning. It will be interesting to see how the company ends up positioning themselves in this area.

Contract OSP Engineers must be familiar with the CenturyLink programs (Fireworks, Bidmaster, Martens, WFMT, NDS). Those type engineers simply are not available. From what I have seen, very very few of the Company Engineers want to come back in a contract setting.
