Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Why am i on a performance improvement plan?

My first question is why any store manager or asm is put on a pip? It wasn't us who put the company in 1.5billion dollars of debt. Nobody talks about that. We don't decide where stores are located. Maybe we should be asking what the presidents pip looks like with a pitiful stock performance. Not investing in technology in a timely manner. Not advertising on tv. Outdated coupon program. My customers keep asking me why they have to pay $29 to get the right price. Why would I pay for this when I have tons of coupons? So now our solution is to have employees wear ribbons calling ourselves furniture experts??? We are far from furniture experts!!!!

Are ASMs misclassified. I thought we were hired as "managers".

You’re on PIP to save the Company money. Each DM has been given the task of finding one manager to place on PIP, usually one who makes above a certain salary. Of course, with politics as they are, you are safe if you are one of the favored but this is nothing new, it’s just enforced now.

When I was a DM there was always pressure to trim excess payroll by weeding out higher earners (this was three years ago). From what I’ve been told by ex-colleagues, the Company is trying to cut a certain amount of payroll in order to please shareholders. Why do you think, as a SM you are not allowed to know what your ASM makes? Know where you stand and stay in good favor with your supervisor and all is good. Otherwise, welcome to the impossible task of making your way off of PIP and retaining your job.

Many managers quit/put on PIP in Chicago. Word on the street is there’s going to be 1 Store Manager runnning all 4 stores in Chicago. Thursday Regional HR, DM and RVP put Store Manager on a PIP and Keyholder quit also. Losing people/getting rid of like crazy.

How about taking away paid unlimited sick time for salaried??? So many abuse this. And can someone look and put a cap on how many weekends off a SM has because they can approve their own???? Nobody seems to be looking but oh my god ours is out of control. Dont DM and HR see this? Huge morale killer for those having to work to cover. Maybe this is only a Midwest thing.

No warning....mystery shop failed! So if my hours are cut because that's the only solution to being profitable why wouldn't service suffer also? I'm sure an RVP could tell me how to do it. Right? So maybe they can jump into the playing field on a closing shift 12 to 10 on a Saturday night and explain it to me. Oh that's right district and regional don't do Manager on duty shifts because that would require multi tasking and getting behind the scary service desk. The next time your rvp is in ask them to process a return for you. What a joke! The regional staff reading this are probably a little nervous just of the thought of it. Oh I know Saturday night is movie night for the family. So a company that is on the brink of major layoffs...why not have the dms and rms step up to the plate and take some closing shifts for the stores so the true managers get a night off? The answer would be that they did 22years ago.

Too little too late! Enjoy movie night!

Did you receive any prior warning? What reason(s) did your supervisor give you?
