Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Upper Management clueless on CWA contract

Apparently, there was a meeting with upper management where they were unaware of the fact that they had to have all contractors gone two weeks prior to layoffs. They didn't know that they couldn't hire contractors back for two years after the layoffs either. Oops!

And.... They just cancelled our layoffs. We're preparing for the next time this happens. We'll be ready. This one was a surprise.

Contractors are the future. Look how at&t went. Verizon's on the verge going same way.

I'm contract worker. Job is secure until January 1st per contract through CenturyLink headquarters. Breach of contract would still result in pay.

Absolutely no language about when they can bring contractors in after the layoff.

In Phoenix the word is the contractors are gone July 16th but they are bringing them back August 1st. According to CTL there is no language or specific date in the contract on when they can bring them back. The employees who are impacted or surplused have retrieval rights for up to 2 years but from what I’m hearing CTL will bring back the contractors and not offer them their job back. They will expect grievances and tie the union and everything up in arbitration and when it’s finally time for a ruling they will just announce another surplus.

No later than fifteen (15) calendar days prior to the

resolution date the Company shall provide the

Union a list of contractors who are performing work

previously performed by represented employees in

the impacted RCA. The list shall include the type

and amount of work they perform in the RCA.

Work that must be returned in accordance with this

subsection will be returned under the following

guidelines:

(a) Work previously performed within a job title

shall be returned and assigned to

employees in the adjustment group with

the skills and training to perform such

work.

(b) If the returned work, as outlined in

subsection (a), does not resolve the

surplus, work previously performed outside

of the title shall be offered to the impacted

employees that have the skills and training

to perform the work. However, if the

returned work will create an opportunity for

an upgrade, the Company will offer

returned work to employees in the

Adjustment Group that have the skills and

training to perform the work. The local

union shall assist in the identification of

non-impacted employees who would be

interested in such an opportunity.
