Can someone in here explain what the big deal is with leaving early on Friday? We are told to start late or take a long lunch. But whatever we do, do not leave early on Friday, but don’t work overtime ?

If you honestly don't know the answer to this question, you're just not that bright. It's because everybody and their mother will manipulate their time so that they too could leave early on Friday. Have you forgotten we have business hours? Kind of hard for members to reach us during our business hours if everybody takes off early on Fridays.
I did it once and got counseled about it. Most associates don't make a call at 4 PM anyway because all the documentation takes too long and it would be OT.
