Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

For those left behind....

If you plan to find a job in SD with your current salary good luck!! No one in SD will pay that much so prepare to make changes.

I think it is pretty harsh and inaccurate to say that those left at QC have “zero skills”. All have skills, be it engineering skills or the social skills to retain a possibly unnecessary position. But if transition to retirement is not in your near-term future, you should make sure that your skills are either easily transferable to a new position at a different company, or you should be focused on developing new skill sets that are transferable while still employed at QC. For me it was retirement on June 19th, but I do see many left behind who are complacent and not growing their skills. These are the people who will have a difficult time in the upcoming competitive job market. Cronyism, long rampant at QC, will likely not be tolerated at other companies.

I still see plenty of strong engineering brains around me. Yes, folks are leaving, but i wouldnt say we crossed the critical point yet. Plenty of knowledge is still here and i feel like there can be some opportunities created for those staying if the company hires young talent and focuses on improving and growing products. Though i am not sure that will happen any time soon.

@kcb

Ask them to look for a job now.....no one will get the same salary. This time is very though and the people left has close to 0 skills.

I know 5 people who moved on from Q in the past few years and stayed in SD. 3 of them have higher paying jobs, one retired by choice, and the other moved.

It isn't all doom and gloom.
