Abusive members

Just wondering, how do you deal with verbally abusive members at your club?

Our manager is a firm believer in that "customer is always right" no matter what they do, so all we can do is take it, no matter how much they are in the wrong. If I quit over anything, this will be it.

Is this the situation elsewhere?

I Had a member threaten to hit me yesterday after I went to my car and got my own wire cutters to cut down a display, all I said was “let them know on the way out, they have cart guys to help you”....... he proceeded to call me lazy.... yes I went off on him....... called for management support, none found

Exactly the members are so cranky anymore damned if you do damned if you don’t. I truly believe it’s because they know Sam’s club do t stand behind their associates. Call home office and get a free gift card. Don’t like your 30 dollar cake bring it back all eaten and get your money back. It’s really sad how they let the members treat us these days.

The way this crazy world is now, you have to treat all members that way. If you don't, you might be on the 6:00 news.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having that experience, nobody deserves to be abused and disrespected. I’ve dealt with members for nearly 20 years and I deal with substantially more angry and upset people in my current management role. I believe that showing empathy, listening and offering solutions are the best approach even to the rude ones. In my years, I’ve also learned that it’s not personal, the member is upset about a situation and fortunately the company does give us leeway to handle most matters. Don’t internalize what is said and stay true to yourself. Hope this helps.
