Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

WE HAVE BECOME...... COMFORTABLY NUMB..........

General Electric leadership attempts to motivate people via the constant threat of losing their jobs. Instead of providing true leadership, GE leaders try to make GE plants compete with other GE plants for jobs and project funding. Not a good team building approach. I have been in meetings where GE expertise is withheld from other GE plants simply because of the job and project funding COMPETITION GE leadership has imposed against each plant. How much are we paying these leaders to lead? Come on guys! This method is simply stupid.

But actively encouraging workers to fear for their job doesn’t make them more competitive and productive; it makes them panicked and incautious. Job insecurity hurts health, makes people burn out, and reduces job satisfaction and performance.

There’s obvious good reason to be nervous. In many cases, finding a new job after losing one takes months, and gets more and more difficult.

GE is frequently criticized for creating excessively competitive cultures and internal politicking. I have read many post about GE's "buddy system" in Greenville, South Carolina. And with the people I know that work in Greenville, I believe this "buddy system" to be prevalent and is the key determining factor of those selected for the layoff list.

This culture has been created by GE Leadership and is an overall symptom of ineffective and inadequate leadership. GE should be working as a global team and not pockets of competition with self preservation goals. Another GE buzz-phrase that I hate is "working in silos" . These GE Silos are the direct result of inadequate and ineffective leadership. Stop the buzz phrases, start leading, and stop ruining my life!!!. LOL

General Electric is such a beurocratic joke. I, like many other employees, once thought I could make a difference. Leadership does nothing but beat us down.

@2aok, it is good to have local leadership that is showing some level of competence. But even the local leadership is too unstable to provide and significant results. Local leadership has bought into the garbage sold by upper leaders. Non stay in their role long enough to face the results of their mistakes. The majority of my time is dedicated to training the revolving leadership instead of using my expertise to promote product quality and training the people that actually do the work. All of the leaders above my level are obstacles to productivity, quality, and service for our customers. They simply are not connected enough to know or even care about the best decisions. They are making massive salaries while continuously promoting their own style of incompetence.

Consider yourself lucky to have the problem initially posted, that shows there is at least a competence level from your leadership (although not aligned with the right mindset for success across the entire business.) I find a more basic flaw conceptually with the culture. Leadership at the highest level does not reflect on historically what made General Electric successful: Its people, and its innovation. These valued resources which were the crux of the operating model are no longer important. A shift to bloated bureaucratic organizational structures have promoted a structure where leadership does not even know what their business does, provides, or needs. Sarcasm could entail on this point about it being all about their compensation packages, but that is beside the point. Gotta return to the basics in order to become successful again, together.

I know of one useless old sr level engineer at GRC who essentially does absolutely nothing but parasiting others' projects to s--- up fund and list his name in presentation. He still alive because his buddy is a chief engineer, who covered him when this useless engineer was asked to leave long time ago. So buddy system is indeed often abused unfortunately.

That buddy system is alive and well across the organization. Transparency does not exist. People are fake, and if you're not, guess what? You are also not on "the list". Best thing to do is get out while you can and find something fulfilling while you don't have to compete against the masses.
