Can someone explain why the stock has a slight run up this week?

People who are googling Oracle's latest earning report get the result from Q4 and think its Q1. I've actually seen a few linked in profiles liking this article. Yes, people are that stupid...

Following g-nax post below, I looked at the Keynote agenda and sure enough LE was first day, not also night before. TK was still listed. This morning the same agenda is gone and agendas and descriptions are either gone or behind registration paywall. Perhaps deciding who "gets" to pitch cloud glories...? Or who still works where...

Hope LE still does keynote. Dude is a charmer with amazing longevity but hey I used an Amdahl in my first job, lol.

Why Oracle Should be Avoided

The share price decrease can possibly be attributed to the new accounting standard adopted by the company and the structural changes which it has undergone in the fourth quarter.

Consequently, the company now reports its new software licenses under its new Cloud license and on-premise license segment. Further, the company merged its Cloud SaaS, Cloud PaaS and IaaS along with its software license updates and product support into Cloud services and license support.

Oracle no longer intends to break out its cloud revenues and does not provide any guidance on SaaS, Cloud PaaS and IaaS. This move is likely to aggravate investor concern regarding the company's outlook.

Moreover, stiff competition in the cloud is expected to hurt margins and will make revenue growth difficult, going forward. Further, large acquisitions can negatively impact the company’s balance sheet in the form of a high level of goodwill and intangible assets. Further, lawsuits and currency volatility owing to its transitions from licensing to cloud is likely to be affect Oracle.

combined with other unfavorable factors like low return on equity (ROE) and low return on Asset and low return on capital (ROC), the stock looks very unattractive. Oracle currently trades at a ROE of 25.6%, lower than the industry average of 32.2%. Moreover, its ROA and ROC looks very uninspiring. It currently trades at a ROA of 9.7% and ROC of 11.3%, compared with an average positive industry average of 11.1% and 16.6%, respectively.

If you are still holding on to shares of Oracle ORCL in your portfolio, it is time you dump them as chances of favorable returns in the near term appear bleak.

Oracle’s shares have declined 7.4% in the past year against the industry’s growth of 31.5%.

I honestly think we'll be just fine.

Gut feeling.

No way are we fine.... TK resigned just a couple of weeks before the earnings call..... that means it's BAD, really, REALLY BAD. Someone had to be blamed for something..... we'll find out on Monday what that something is.

What will be fun is the investors asking the questions "how did you get these cloud numbers? "

"Well its all lumped together you see... we are not required to report it separately anyways, so get lost. This is Oracle we are great and we have the greatest cloud on the market our total cloud revenue has grown 30% since the last quarter."

This is pretty much what happened last earnings call and the stock took a dive. I expect all the analysts to not buy the bs and start telling people to dump Oracle as fast as they can.

Agree with the last few; they will do everything (and anything) to make cloud look good. And there are so many ways to cook numbers...

Well, IBM lumps in cloud deals with their Services group. You can bet ORCL is scrambling to tie every dollar possible to vague Cloud revenue, kind of like the direction SC said they were going during the last earnings report. If a ORCL tech fields a database or Peoplesoft customer Service Request, that's Cloud dollars! Will be fun watching MH and SC do the dance during the earnings call!

Revenue, not revenge. 😂

They’re just calling all S&S deals “cloud deals” cause they’re including the SAAS catalogue in all deals gratis. The idea: the clients get their old tech S&S and the option to move to cloud with no additional licensing / SAAS costs. It’s all “possibly” cloud revenge at some point, just not right now. (Wink wink). Clients like it. They feel like they have options. It’s definitely not cloud. But “ it could be cloud” later. 🤞

LE may choose not to participate in this one given that he's not required to attend. That may send a signal to investors right there, though. It looks like he has decided not to give his usual ORCL "State of the Union" keynote/fireside chat on the Sunday evening before Oracle Open World 2018 starts. The press always attended to hear the jabs he took at competitors but as the saying goes about throwing rocks at the enemy when your own house is made of glass . . .

No one can deflect a train wreck. but... this wont be a train wreck for anything but cloud growth numbers. all the market will see is stagnation. The only thing that will kill it is missing over all revenue, then the whole house of cards comes tumbling down

Dollars and cents will beat. Cloud revenue will be asked about and MH, SC, and LE will deflect the question.

...but you can only hide for so long....
