Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Possible to put myself on the lay-off list?

When this happened in 2016, people effectively "checked" out, what I mean by that is they continued by and large to "work", turning up sporadically, not providing updates to their whereabouts, plodding along and doing the minimum to exist as a functional employee, I fully understood that and was "on-board" myself, you feel very betrayed by an organisation you sweated blood and tears for many years, just putting you on the sc-apheap, while keeping and promoting other wasters because they said the right things to the right people, buying into the happy clappy approach and back slapping each other on jobs well done, when they had done absolutely f*k all but waste time and money. In that situation, it's hard when your nature is to do a good job as a conscientious worker to switch, but once your mindset goes into that mode, it gets easier. I found it easy to e-mail my boss, telling him I was not going to be in, as I had a "delivery", "doctor or dentist" appointment, whatever I wanted, note I said "telling", not "asking", it go to the stage where I didn't even say anything at times, I got plenty done outside of work, long standing chores / jobs, got my CV together and got myself sorted and ready for when it actually happened, at no point was I threatened with a disciplinary or performance plan, there was just too much going on with the layoffs. I got may payoff, got a new job within a couple of months, better paid and got on with my life, I believe that my attitude and approach in those last few weeks helped me move on. So I advise don't just quit, you may miss a payoff, just mentally "check out" and get on with things, life goes on, and this company does not define you, you define yourself, TR long since went to sht, this had an air of inevitability about it, when Thomson bought Reuters with their pocket money, Reuters management must have been laughing with joy, as it was near going doen the pan, 10 years later with zero growth until a single digit this year (probably creatively accounted anyway), Thomson dumped it faster than sh-- of a shovel, they could have earned more in a low interest bank account, the last few years were very much "let's see how much longer this can last". See this as a new chapter in your life, with no remorse, the old company is gone, the new one will bear no resemblance in any form.

Why do so many people feel the need to say "just quit"? Nobody is going to quit when there's every chance they'll get paid off this time or next. If Refinitiv make work unbearable all that'll happen is tons of ppl will go sick with "stress".

Yes, it's called your two week notice. Seriously, let's have an honest conversation that if you're that unhappy, then quit. Waiting for a windfall isn't going to fix the anxiety you feel or unhappiness you have at work.

I doubt going to a manager or a manager's manager would do the trick. In my organization even the Global Head found out after the deal was done.

I would think so. But I wouldn’t tell anyone other than your manager until it is done. People are gossiping a lot, and you don’t want to mess up your opportunity. If you don’t like or trust your manager, just go to their manager and ask. In this environment I’m sure they would be happy to grant your wish. The sad thing is, when people volunteered in the past it would save someone else. But with this lay-off you volunteering will not save anyone. They just add you to list.

Well they are looking to cut costs. Maybe just ask. As a 8yr TR employee who just recieved my notice its bittersweet. Time to find or turn over a new leaf I guess.
