Thread regarding Sears layoffs

If ch 7 is filed and made public on Sunday 10/14/18

Will we report to work as usual on Monday? Or will the doors be locked until the liquidators arrive?

How will we be notified if ch 7 is announced after the store closes on Sunday?

You wd think there wd be some kind of direction from management

For those of you who need hours then liquidation is for you. When our store closed I could work as many hours as I wanted. I made more money in the three months of working 40 hours of more than I would have made the whole year. I am still ahead of the game in pay for the year because of all the hours I got in January and Feb.

The correct procedure is to go to work as normal and clock in. Under law, they have to pay you for any hours on the clock. If there is a bankruptcy, you will be told. Even in a Chapter 7 liquidation, they will need people to price and liquidate the merchandise just as in any other store closure. If that happens, work as much as you want as they will not care about overtime, just like in any other store closure. Don't even clock out for lunch if you don't want to. Even take an hour and go have a nice one every day, all on the clock. the downside is that after all that, despite what they tell you, you will likely be screwed out of any severance, banked vacation, or personal days. You will lose everything. However, you might be able to "slip" on the floor on your way out. scream "I've fallen and I can't get up !" to make sure everyone notices you. At no point attempt to get up and walk. Lay there and make them call you an ambulance. tell the doctors at the ER that you are experiencing pain. no matter how many MRIs or Xrays they give you, insist you are in pain. After that you need to consult an attorney as I am neither an attorney or a paid non-attorney spokesman. Good luck to all of you.

jva is correct. The stores will stay open, since liquidation takes open stores to complete. Liquidators will be contracted in the next week or two, so it will be somewhat business as usual. But there may be operational changes. For instance, they may say that PAs will no longer be sold (you can be happy about that). They may say that all sales are final. There will be a period when trucks are random (sometimes you won't get much of anything, sometimes you will be overwhelmed). You will likely see prices rise, but still be marked as liquidation sales.

At HQ, there will be nearly continuous layoffs, as many functions that are deemed unnecessary will be eliminated. Expect 50% reductions in as little as 2-3 weeks.

Even if there was a Ch. 7 announced that doesn't mean that suddenly all of the Sears and Kmarts are going to suddenly lock up all at once. More likely, you'll show up, the SM will give you the speech that your store is shutting down. They probably won't know when or where the liquidation will start but will probably be soon. Or maybe they'll even give you a call in the morning before you go to work, who knows.

I hate all this waiting though as well but I have a feeling it is going to come out by tomorrow morning since that is when the loan payment is due and that all last week was a bunch of discussions going on, deciding which kind of planned bankruptcy (and IT WILL be a bankruptcy, don't tell me otherwise) is going to be implemented and just go from there.

All I can say is, glad I got another job lined up for myself because no matter what is announced, it will not be a good future for anyone in Sears or Kmart.
