Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

The challenges in front of the necesary simplification of GE

An excellent article that paints a clear picture of all the challenges that Larry Culp has to face on his path to simplify GE and make it an efficient company again. I know that there is a big debate going on about whether Culp is u to the task, and my intention was not to add to that with this article, but rather to portray the extent and the complexity of the problems that are in front of GE’s road to recovery.

Comstock was a disgrace during all those years at GE. Put her in jail, for failure to do her job as “VICE chairman” !?!?!? of the GE company.

GE is going broke. Way too much debt; need cash right now. Either sell stuff or get some kind of government help - that's the plan. Leadership isn't going to share that with the common employees. This is not a matter of becoming more efficient in the shops or inspiring people or developing new products - no money for that. I would expect to see a spin off or two and/or layoff. Or maybe someone can convince Trump to give a big order. You know Don loves to spend.

GE Power has about 3 to 5 times the engineers it needs.

Hopefully Culp will follow P&G, they got rid of a lot of their management fat and are starting to see the results of a much leaner corporation. Whatever he's going to do, he needs to do it like he said he was going to. Otherwise, he's just another GE mouth piece.

Comestock , was what was wrong with GE. How she can sell a book on GE leadership is a complete joke. Under Immelt at Power the layers of middle management was complete joke. Recall , back then Power was doing well , the business ended up being a place CAS and wonder boys ended up because the margins were good and it was training ground for these id--ts. The business as a whole could sustain their overhead. In the current power market business climate and the pressure of Alstom overhead in Europe, and these jokers being on the payroll is not sustainable. GE needs to ditch it’s management book on requiring layers of do nothing managers. Think about the endless conference calls with people on the call and ask yourself , why is this person on the call and what are they contributing to call and the process. My guess is GE Power could cut 1/3 of these do nothing middle managers that are collecting 6 figures plus. Take that money and hire two Indians to support your clients.

I've noticed that every time I refer to a "a group or gathering of witches who meet regularly" the post is deleted.

She is the highest ranking example of corruption that is still eating GE from the inside.

Starting from wall st reports, everyone from top to bottom got good at messaging and spin. Anyone who spoke up or threatened the corrupt power cliques got punished. Mutual back scratchers got promoted. There were some honest managers here and there but overall, the job preservation through politics became more important than serving customers or shareholders (=revenues and profits).

It is hard to change culture overnight, especially something that took decades to metastasize.

This problem gets worse higher in the orgs, in roles that are not quantifiable or have long time to fruition. There are 6 or 7 layers between ceo and engineers. It is a complex business but does not need so many layers to pass data and decisions to right places. Start with commercial simplification. There should be one ge approach to customer interaction rather than fighting for the dollar internally

Culp has got his work cut out. With some help from rank and file he can create a revolution to overthrow the bureaucracy. Otherwise GE will disintegrate.

comstock and immelt contributed absolutely nothing to GE, but rather were part of the problem. I don't know how either of them could possibly be employed today / sell a book.

Assuming that he is genuinely trying to improve the company, as an outsider, Larry is up the GE bureaucracy war machine -- an army of executives, 6-sigma black belts and fast works certified coaches. Good luck to him.

It's amazing that Comstock talks about the complexity as if she weren't part of creating it why didn't the reporter call her on that. She was part of the management team responsible. But I'm sure she took a healthy retirement package and is free to sit back and pontificate while the rest of us worry about whether we will have a job thanks to the handy work of people like her.

Why would anyone buy her book? I mean she was part of the team that has brought this once mighty company to its knees. Would you buy a book about boats from the crew of the titanic?

There's nothing especially good or bad about that CNN article. Similar observations are in countless business publications.

I wish Comstock wasn't mentioned at all, but she was one of seven people quoted. Calling the article "just an advert for comstocks book" is not accurate.

Trump calls CNN "fake news" but that's his name for any unflattering coverage. Classic demagogue. It must work, as people here are slamming CNN without reading the article. Freedom of the press is in the US Constitution, but Trump attacks it constantly.

Article is just an advert for comstocks book. As someone said in a review. "This is basically a memoir of a middling mediocre GE bureaucrat who somehow rose to be Vice Chairman despite a lack of technical or financial expertise. Lots of made-up nonsense words "ecomagination" and other drivel. It is not a surprise that GE went down the toilet with people like Comstock in the C-Suite."

Many a true word spoken

You want to simplify GE, get rid of the overpaid simpletons!!! We know who they are in Schenectady!!! I hope Culp cleans house and makes the tough decisions that really need to be done. Sadly I believe he probably lacks the balls to do it and we'll just get more of the same.
