Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

"General and administrative support employees"

Who exactly is UP referring to when they say "general and administrative support employees"? To me this is vague, but I get the feeling that it is referring to the whole workforce. If they are referring to the whole workforce that would be cuts of 12,600 employees. Does anyone know if this number is correct? If true UP will have gone from 50000 employees to 30000 in just a few years.

I’ve been hearing that the bulk of the 30% will be from the HQ building. Basically if you don’t move freight you’re a possible target. You know how in the old days you could call a company and someone would answer right away? And now if you call just about anyone you have a long wait, or no operators at all — just email? This is happening because it’s cheaper to get rid of people and the public has become desensitized to it. Same here at the railroad. If you need someone to help you it’s going to take longer. If people need programs or reports to provide analysis in the field or HQ, it will take longer or won’t be done at all. Customers will have to wait longer for some lower value shipments to be delivered.

People are getting accustomed to waiting and are accepting it as the new way to do business and UP is doing the same thing here. And if customers don’t like it, from management’s point of view they can always ship by truck.

I think the post earlier sums it up nicely. It is the just the beginning! It's the beginning of the end of the UP! If someone doesn't stop in and stop Fritz from doing more damage, then it'll be over soon for everyone! Anyone keeping track of the hiring bonuses given to prospective employees? All the class 1's are doing it! Is it because everyone is doing that bad! This downturn in employment volumes within the rail industry is due to the Precision railroading that dumbfuck Harrison implemented! The plan got rid of so many good people! Those good people had friends who heard about the layoffs, and the news spread on an exponential scale! The class 1's can't hire anyone, because no one wants to work for a railroad! You have better job security in the fast food industry than the rail industry! The hilarious thing is now the pay for fast food is becoming competitive with the rail industry! Lance Fritz needs to be removed from his 19th floor sanctuary! I'll even agree to have all of them removed since none of them give a damn about their employees! The rest of them are too busy kissing Lances' a-- anyways! Oust them all, and start fresh! This company has gone to sh--, and it's way overdue for a corporate shake-up!

From what I've seen and experienced those with prior field experience had their jobs abolished or were laid off this week. This seems to be just the beginning.

In hunter harrisons world, if youre not flipping switches or in the cab, youre a parasite to the investors.

Pride aside, it should almost be a criminal offense to destroy a great company like this.

What i learned today was that the protected people are still protected. If youre an average joe that shows up and does whats asked, youre gone. Those left are swimming in a concentrated toxic stew. So much for that culture change initiative...

I imagine mid to lower level management is in the crosshairs as well. There's been rumors about management cuts before the precision railroading became implemented at UP.

You read it right. It means everyone except management is in the crosshairs. You will be gone by Christmas.
